 Ryan Tung was the winner of the boys senior race in 16:11, while teammate Colin Grace of North Penn finished 3rd in the boys freshman race in 18:15 to lead the Knights to a runner up finish down in Delaware behind Severna Park. The other PA winner on the day was Brandon Hontz of West Chester Rustin, who ran 17:13 to hold off Austin Maxwell of Kennett by 11 seconds. For the girls, Jess Delviscio of West Chester Rustin won the senior race with a time of 19:15 to lead her team to a 5th place finish. Girls Highlights

Northern Potter's Tim Adams came away with a victory over Devan Cavanaugh of Coudersport by 9 seconds with a time of 17:14. Coudersport did have two of the top five finishers, as Cavanaugh's teammate Gabe Trimbur ran 17:47 to earn 5th place. For the girls, Makalia Banka had to push all the way to the very end to defend her home course, eventually coming away victorious over Rachel Guyer of Ridgway by 3 seconds with a time of 20:34. Riley Crissman (3rd) and Morgan Whitlow (7th) also finished in the top ten for the hosts.

Cherokee HS
Several PA girls teams made the trip over to New Jersey for some 2 mile class races and they left the day on top, taking home the top four overall team spots. The big storyline ahead of this meet was the 1st "head-to-head" match-up between AAA champions Unionville and their rivals Pennsbury. Not everyone ran against each other in these class races, but it did give fans an idea of what to expect between these two talented squads. In the overall results, Unionville had the two fastest runners in Kacie Breeding (11:16 for 3200 meters) and Olivia Young (11:17.2). They also had three of the four class race winners on the day. Pennsbury followed that up with three in the top 8, with Olivia Sargent (3rd) and Hannah Molloy (7th) leading the way. But in the end, Unionville finished with five of the top 19 overall to edge out Pennsbury by only 10 points, 42-52. For the boys, PA finished the day on top, as Conestoga continued their march towards the top of the state by having the best overall team score, defeating Tatnall (De) 120-151. Andrew Marston led the way once again for the Central League squad, running 9:29 to finish 2nd overall. Conestoga had all five runners inside of the top 45 overall to march on to a big win.
PREVIEW: The annual Cherokee Challenge is a 2 mile race by graduation class. In the past two years, it has become the coming out party for the girls AAA champions, Unionville. They are schedule to compete in this race on Saturday, where they have been the unofficial champions in each of the past two years. State title rivals Pennsbury will also be making the trip to New Jersey for this special invitational. Unionville currently have a 5 race winning streak against the Falcons. Will the streak continue or will Pennsbury draw first blood against the champions?

North Pocono boys had three of the top four overall finishers, including individual champion Matt Kravitz (16:06) and 3rd place finisher Mike Brenkosh. In the end, those 6 team points was just enough to hold off Wallenpaupack and their 51 second spread to win the team title by 2 points, 50-52. For the girls, the race for the team title was even closer than it was for the boys. North Pocono, Pittston, and Wallenpaupack all had two runners in the top ten, but the team title went to the team with the best 5th runner, and Haley Miller came through for her Wallenpaupack team to help them win the title 61-63-66 over Pittston and North Pocono. Kaitlyn Lewis of North Pocono won the individual gold by 3 seconds over Alyssa Lafave of Wallenpaupack with a time of 19:30. Boys Highlights

Strath Haven girls made it two wins in two invitationals, winning the small school race at familiar Rose Tree Park with a 2-4-5 finish from Maia Mesyngier, Claire Wolters, and Isabel Cardi. Their score of 33 points won the race by 46. Kayla Connelly of Lansdale Catholic held off Mesyngier by a slim 3 second margin with a winning time of 18:58.5. In the large school race, Central Bucks West rebounded in emphatic fashion from the heat at PTXC 6 with a 50 point win over rivals Central Bucks South. Maddie Villalba made it three top five finishes this season and her first win of the year, running 19:00.1 to win by 9 seconds over Lotte Black of Wissahickon. For the boys, the small school race saw the top three teams separated by a slim 11 points, with Bishop Shanahan coming out on top over Harriton and Strath Haven 66-72-77. The front two of Seamus Breslin (4th) and Seamus Fromhartz (8th) did well up front to help secure the win for their team. Individual honors went to Julian Degroot-Lutzman of Masterman, who ran 16:21.9 to win by 10 seconds over Liam Galligan of Springfield (Delco). In the large school race, Bensalem finished 6-7-8-9-11 to come away with the team title with 41 points. St Joe’s Prep finished 2nd for the 2nd meet running, scoring 63 points. PREVIEW Girls (By Bill Coren) GIRLS LARGE PREVIEW TEAM--11 schools CENTRAL BUCKS WEST has won 4 years in a row and this year will be no different. CBWEST was 2nd at SHARP and 4th at PTX6 GOLD so far this season. The runner-up team is likely to be WISSAHICKON. INDIVIDUAL--2 girls will battle for the LARGE title---Black(WISS) and Villalba(CBW). Black beat Villalba at Sharp by 1 spot and then she was 2nd at Abington. Villalba(a top 800 runner) could run fast on this easyish course. She is also coming off a strong 4th place finish at PTX6 GOLD. 3rd place should likely go to UPPER DARBY’s Joseph who finished 4th at Abington.
GIRLS SMALL PREVIEW TEAM--21 schools will be competing and it is a true mixture of public and private schools. The 2 favorites in the TEAM race appear to be Central League foes, HARRITON and STRATH HAVEN. Although HARRITON has only run a league meet, they had 5 girls within 45 seconds on the fast Haverford course and look very strong! STRATH HAVEN is coming off a dual meet loss to a tough CONESTOGA, but they did cruise to victory at the Abington Invitational. As for 3rd place--GWYNNED MERCY was 3rd at Abington and have a solid pack!! PREDICTION----TOO CLOSE TO CALL(plus some girls may be taking the ACT’s that morning) INDIVIDUAL--There are 8 girls who could win this race!! COUNTRY DAY(SACRED HEART) has 2 former CYO sister stars(now freshmen) who opened their season last week running the OPEN race at the QUAD meet and beating some quality adult OPEN runners. The Siefried’s could surprise and even go 1-2. LANSDALE CATHOLIC’s Connelly still appears to be the favorite! She finished 3rd at the tough CBEast Invitational and had a great STATE race in 2013. Ashworth from MASTERMAN was 3rd at the CHA-SSIDE Invite and has an outside chance. The 2 top girls from STRATH HAVEN and HARRITON will test each other on Saturday as they look forward to Wednesday’s league rematch. Mesyngier(SHAVEN) won at Abington and Wolters(SHAVEN) was 3rd. Greene(HAR) and last year State qualifier Henderson(HAR) are both very well coached and have a legitimate chance to win! Boys St Joe’s Prep will be contesting the large school race after a 2nd place finish at Lebanon Valley last weekend. Isaiah Fisher and Joseph Pisacano finished 1-2 in that race last week, and with two low finishers, the Hawks will be in the mix for a team title on Saturday. West Chester East and Central Bucks South will be out to keep St Joe’s Prep from getting into the win column. In the small school race, Masterman will look to earn their 2nd win in a row and keep their run at the state title on course. Julian DeGroot-Lutzner will lead the team while looking for his 2nd invite win in a row.

Casey Comber of Hatboro Horsham continued his winning ways while making the most of the cooler conditions. The senior pushed through the switchback hills of Desales University in a big way to win his 2nd invitational in as many weeks with a season best 15:57.82. In the team standings, Parkland placed three in the top 13 overall to come away with the team title over Twin Valley 91-105. For the girls, Parkland and Northwestern Lehigh went tooth and nail for the team championship, with the AAA squad Parkland narrowly defeating AA Northwestern Lehigh and their 53 second spread 88-91. Mikalya Stoudt led the way for the winners with a 5th place finish. Individual honors went to Meseret Hart of Southern Lehigh, who ran 19:23 to hold off Tina Capparell by 8 seconds. Boys Highlights

Holy Ghost Prep and Hatboro Horsham make the trip up to the Lehigh Valley and the challenging Desales University course for the Centaur Invite Saturday. Holy Ghost Prep hung tight with AAA competition at Abington and will look to measure up against the best in District 11. Hatboro Horsham will have the leadership of Casey Comber to continue their momentum from last week’s PTXC 6 meet, where the Hatters came away with the Blue race team title. Parkland won their first invitational of the season two weeks ago and will look to keep their winning streak on track as one of the District 11 AAA favorites. They used a 50 second spread in their first win. Can they improve on that pack running style?
Girls Northwestern Lehigh and Parkland will square off as two teams with big aspirations tackle the switch back hills of Desales University. Northwestern Lehigh were excellent in their debut race, using a 48 second spread to get their first invite win of the season in August. The top three of Carly Pierce, Molly Tavin, and Racele Cerrone were only 8 seconds apart in that race. A strong performance from those three will make their tough to beat Saturday. Parkland fought the heat and humidity of Kutztown last week to finish 3rd at PTXC 6 in the Gold Race. Mikayla Stoudt finished in the top 20, but victory will be her target at Desales. |

Matt McGoey (15:41.5) and Hunter Wharrey (15:44.5) finished 2-3 for North Allegheny on their way to a 4th place finish in the Division 1 race out in Ohio. Clara Savchik led the Madeleine Davison-less North Allegheny girls team with a 12th place finish in the girls Division 1 race. Riley Kwiatkowski of Greensburg Salem finished 2nd in the girls Division 2 race with a time of 19:03. Gary Olsen of North East finished 15th in the boys Division 3 race to lead his team to a 3rd place finish. Raechel White (4th) and Kate McIntosh (6th) of North East cracked the top ten and ran under 19:30 in the girls Division 3 race.

The boys championship race was a test of the quality of Malvern Prep against the 4 time top 3 AAA state finishers and established power Cardinal O'Hara. When the smoke cleared, the new kids on the block solidified their place among the best teams in PA in the 2014 season!
Jaxson Hoey led the Malvern Prep Friars to the team title over O'Hara with a gold medal performance with a time of 15:30, one of the five fastest times ever recorded at Belmont Plateau, and the fastest time by a PA runner! Malvern placed three in the top six overall and five in the top 20 to score 48 points to defeat O'Hara by 31. Jake Brophy of Central Bucks East ran a season best 15:39 to finish 2nd, while Kevin James of Cardinal O'Hara ran 15:51 to finish 3rd. In Division 1, Council Rock South had two of the top three finishers with Andrew Hannah winning gold (16:57) and Joe Maguire earning bronze (17:09). Behind them, Great Valley ran a 52 second spread with five finishers in the top 17 to win the team title over Council Rock South 55-75. In division 2, The Haverford School finished 5th with a score of 118 points, with Alex Kim leading the way with a 12th place finish in 17:47. For the girls, Cardinal O'Hara put on one of the best performances in the young season thus far to win the championship race by a comfortable margin. The Lady Lions placed five in the top 13 overall with a 1-5 spread of 28 seconds to defeat Great Valley 42-63. 3rd place went to North Penn, who got a little bit of revenge over Central Bucks East by a 73-82 score line.
The other big story was the high school debut of Gabrielle Wilkinson of Friends Central. In her first big invitational race, Wilkinson finished 2nd overall with a time of 19:28, which was the 2nd best time run by all PA girls on the day. Elise Claffey of Great Valley finished 3rd in 19:30.

PREVIEW Boys Cardinal O’Hara make their 2014 invitational debut at the Briarwood Invite. The Lions have won the boys championship race in each of their last three trips. The road block on the way to their 4th straight Briarwood crown comes in the form of Malvern Prep. The Friars are one of the up and coming teams this season, led by the duo of Jaxson Hoey and Billy McDevitt. The Independent School champions are coming off a victory at the Abington Invitation, where Hoey came away with his first individual win of the season. Hoey and Kevin James will go head to head in this race as they hope to push their teams over the line. Jake Brophy of Central Bucks East will be looking for 3 wins in 3 invites, while Sam Ritz of Germantown Academy will make his 2014 invite debut. Him and Hoey have quite a history against each other, and the latest chapter should be exciting. Can Malvern knock off one of PA’s best teams? Who will take individual gold? Girls Prior to the O’Hara boys taking the course, their female counterparts will look to make it back to back invitational victories in the girls championship race. The Lady Lions will face off against North Penn, Great Valley, and Central Bucks East. CB East have two wins in two invites, including a win last weekend in their home invitational against North Penn. Lizzie Morris has led the way in both of their invite wins. She won her home invite last week and will have plenty of momentum coming on. O’Hara is coming off of a win at the Twin Valley Invite last weekend, where their scoring five were separated by only 44 seconds, one of the best spreads in PA in the early going. The championship race will feature the high school debut of Gabrielle Wilkinson of Friends Central. The freshman has been a phenomenon on the summer track circuit, winning two age group national titles in July. She is also the NBN Indoor Junior High mile record holder (5:02). How will she perform at the 5000 meter distance? |

Central Cambria girls were dominant once again on the district 6 championship course, winning their 2nd invitational in as many tries with a score of 32 points. The champs had four of the top seven places, led by individual winner Sydney Gilkey (18:52), Samantha Koss (4th), Emma Wess (5th) and Sydney Croft (7th). Their male teammates were also able to secure a team title, holding off Frankfort 122-149. The Red Devils were led by a runner up finish by Bryce Descavish in 16:30, just 17 seconds behind Will Kachman of Bedford, who ran 16:13 to secure his 2nd win of the season. Boys Highlights

Griffin Molin of South Williamsport reminded everyone that the champion of Class A is still here and ready to defend his title. Molino debuted at Penn State and ran 15:43 to win the race by 13 seconds. Jack Tidball of Tunkhannock ran 16:02 to finish 3rd, while Zach Brehm of Carlisle ran 16:13 to finish 4th. Brehm did lead his teammates to a tiebreaker victory over University (OH), with both teams scoring 81 points. Carlisle had the better 6th man by over 30 places to secure the win.

Palmyra girls continue their hot streak through the cool conditions, securing the team title with a perfect score of 15 points. Miranda Salvo led the way with a winning time of 20:09, while her four scoring teammates finished just 32 seconds behind her to secure the 2nd best spread to win a race this season. For the boys, Cedar Crest placed five of the top nine led by a 3rd place finish from Jared Glosser and a 29 second spread to defeat Palmyra 27-44. |

Individual gold went to Liam Raeshler of Clarion, who ran 17:01 to win by nearly 20 seconds. For the girls, Lexi Bible of Hickory won her 2nd invitational of the season with a time of 20:37, just 5 seconds ahead of Jordan Williams of Sharon. Haley Boyd finished 3rd for Hickory to lead her team to a victory over Wilmington 68-96.

Slippery Rock University
Mount Lebanon boys made it two wins out of three invitationals, and three top two finishes so far this season, placing five in the top 18 to win the AAA crown over North Hills 61-92. North Hills did get one victory over Mount Lebanon, with Jacob Heinauer of North Hills (16:26) defeating Ian Baun of Mount Lebanon by 13 seconds to win the individual gold. In AA boys, Mars Area were the only team to place five runners in the top 30 and that was the key to a team title over South Fayette 86-105. Zack White of West Allegheny came away with the individual title, running 17:04 to win by 12 seconds over Ben Bickerton of Southmoreland. In Class A, Avonworth were the only team with five finishers in the top 25 overall to win the team title over Our Lady of Sacred Heart 69-83. Griffin Mackey of Sewickley Academy continued his good start to the season, taking home the victory with a time of 16:38. For the girls, Mount Lebanon were once again led by Kelsey Potts, who rebounded from her runner up finish at Red White and Blue and earned her 2nd win of the season with a time of 18:23. Her team placed five in the top 18 to earn a win of AA Villa Maria Academy 55-84.
In the AA race, Beaver Area placed three in the top nine, including runner up Ruthe Neeley to hold off South Fayette for the team title 44-56. Individual honors went to Meredith Prather of Meadville, who ran 21:02 to hold off Neeley by a slim 3 seconds. In Class A, Laurel continued to impress in a big way, placing four in the top 15 overall to win the team title over Vincentian Academy 43-80. Vincentian did have the individual winner in Class A state champion Marianne Abdalah. The sophomore secured her first victory of the season in comfortable fashion, running 18:52.2 to win by nearly a full minute.

After finishing 2nd overall at the Red White and Blue Invite, Villa Maria Academy will be back in action and will be looking to get their first win of the season. Freshman Hannah Ricci broke out for the District 10 champions and was the top finisher for her team ahead of the likes of Claire Brown and Grace Trucilla. They will be stepping out of division and entering the AAA race. Waiting for them at the line will be Mount Lebanon, AAA team champions last week at Red White and Blue. Kelsey Potts will lead her team once again and will look to get into the winners circle for the 2nd time in 3 weeks after missing out last week on gold. How will the AA favorites measure up against the District 7 AAA champions? In the A race, Vincentian Academy’s Marianne Abdalah will be hoping to compete after succumbing to the heat and humidity in the final ¼ mile at Red White and Blue, resulting in a DNF. The team from Laurel will look to keep themselves in the Class A title hunt with another solid performance. Alsion Flier will lead the team up front. In the AA race, Beaver Area will have the presence of Caitlin Cavaliere to lead their way to the top after finishing 3rd in the AA team standings at Red White and Blue. South Fayette finished right behind them in that race by only 23 points. The rematch should be exciting in much nicer conditions. Boys Mount Lebanon will look to close the gap on North Allegheny as they will enter the AAA race as the heavy favorites. Pack running will be the name of their game on Saturday, with only two sub 17 minute runners on the books at the moment. After a 2nd place finish at Red White and Blue, can they earn a team title at a big invitational? North Hills got off to a good start, led by a 15:55 performance from Jacob Heinauer. How the rest of the squad matches up with Mount Lebanon may decide the winner. In the AA race, South Fayette have been off to a solid start thanks to some decent pack running. The team doesn’t have a sub 17 minute runner on the roster yet, but they have 5 sub 18:30 runners in their ranks. Beaver Area will look to challenge the favorites, with Riley Lamison leading the way. In the A race, Sewickley Academy have the deepest squad in the A division in the early going, entering the race with 4 sub 18 minute runners, and a sub 17 minute runner in Griffin Mackey. Our Lady of Sacred Heart have a top five that can match up with Sewickley, but how can the front of their pack match up with only two sub 18 minute runners on the team at the present time?
