Midwest Meet of Champions- Ohio Boys & Girls win Team Titles. Tyler Johnson runs US #5 400m - 46.19!

Boys Highlights


Sweltering heat and some pretty hot times showcased the 2016 Midwest Meet of Champions.  Team Ohio started off with a win in the 4x800 running 7:41.01.  The team of Tyndale Hannon (1:54.42), Billy Woltz (1:57.25), Simon Alford (1:55.42) and Mitchell Towne (1:53.90) just edged Indiana who ran 7:42.17.  Team Indiana was Isaac Bentz (1:55.36), Brisco Wood (1:58.56), Tony Newbern (1:53.14) and Lucas Rhed (1:55.09).


Ohio's Tyler Johnson won the 100 in a time of 10.72.  He came back in the 400 running a US #5 46.19, setting a new meet record of 46.19.  Also breaking the old meet record of 46.55 set in 1990 by Darnell Hall of Michigan, was Michigan's Montell Hood who ran 46.29 (US #8).


In the 1,600 Ohio's Andrew Jordan ran a workman like race, winning in 4:10.17.  He split 64.011 in the first 400 and followed that with a 61.201 - 2:05 at the half, 61.199 3:06.410 at the 3/4  and closed with a 63.765.  Ohio's Mitchell Poynter was 2nd in 4:13.79 and Luke Wagner completed the 1,2,3 sweep for Ohio with a 4:14.76.


Indiana's Cooper Williams went sub-1:50 in the 800, running a 1:49.97 (US #9) and just missing the meet record of 1:49.27 set in 2009 by Michigan's Tommy Brinn.  The top five runners were all under 1:54.  2nd went to Dekaryea Freeman of Michigan with a 1:52.74, 3rd to Hari Sathyamurthy of Indiana with a 1:52.86, 4th to Jackson Grzymkowski of Michigan with a 1:53.09 and 5th to Gavin Gaynor of Ohio with a 1:53.59.


In the 4x200m, the Michigan team of Zaqwon Powell, Donovan Hodgson, Delan Wynn and De'Shon Collier ran a fast 1:25.85.

The High Jump went to Inidiana's Daniel Armstrong.  Armstrong cleared 7-00.00 to win over his teammate SahnQuan Hemphill (6-10.00) and Ohio's Jeffrey Floyd Jr. (6-08).


Four boys were over 60 in the Shot Put with Connor Bandel of Michigan throwing 67-04.25 (US #10) and setting a new meet record.  The old record was held by Ohio's Dustin Brode who threw 67-01.50 in 2010.  The others over 60' were Nik Curtiss of Ohio with a throw of 62-10.50, Jalil Brewer of Indiana with a 61-06.25 and Michigan's Justin Scavarda with a throw of 60-07.75. Bandel also won the Discuss with a throw of 185-09.

Team Ohio also swept the Pole Vault with all three of its vaulters over 16'.  Lucas Kelley won with a jump of 16-09.  Robby Oswald also went 16-09 for 2nd and Christian Champen with 16-00 for 3rd. Kelly and Oswald both had attemps at 17' to tie the record set by Indiana's Deakin Volz last year.


Girls Highlights


The girl's 100m was won by Michigan's Madison Meredith with a time of 11.95.  She was the only girl under 12 today with Ohio's Justice Richardson and Michaela Butler going 2, 3 with times of 12.01 and 12.04.


The 1,600 was very competitive with Rachel Bonner of Michigan holding off a close field with her winning time of 4:56.54. Grace Walther of Indiana was 2nd (4:56.72), Hanna Stoffle of Indiana was 3rd (4:57.54), Alex Buck of Indiana was 4th in 4:57.67, Michigan's Lexa Barrott was 5th in 4:59.55 and Maddy Trevisan of Michigan was 6th just getting under 5:00 with a 4:59.86.


In the girl's 200m, Michigan's Sekayi Bracey was the only girl under 24, winning with a time of 23.93 and just missing the meet record of 23.81 set in 2012 by Michigan's Kyra Jefferson.  Emmarie Foote of Ohio was 2nd in 24.36 and Indiana's Bryeana Byrdson was 3rd in 24.89.


In the 4x100, the Michigan team of Sekayi Bracey, Erica Sheahan, Kaitlyn Davidson and Madison Meredith ran a 46.71.  They weren't far off of the met record of 46.19 by Michigan in 2013.


The 4x400m saw an Ohio team of Alexya Peoples, Rebekah Carr, Brittany Aveni and Olivia Buchtel run a 3:44.75.  Aveni won the 800m with a time of 2:11.48. 


Michigan's Sekayi Bracey won the Long Jump with the only leap over 19'.  She went 19-05.00.

In the Pole Vault, Ally Thompson of Ohio was the only girls over 13', winning with a vault of 13.00.
