State Meet Preview and Predictions

Division I Boys

4x800m Relay

1a Dayton Carroll 8:00.66
1b Cleveland Glenville 7:51.18
2a Huber Heights Wayne 8:03.32
2b North Canton Hoover 7:51.15
3a Cleveland Heights 7:44.76
3b Hudson 7:49.44
4a Toledo St. John's Jesuit 7:51.25

5b Lakewood St. Edward 7:55.13
6a Mason 7:58.63
6b Columbus St. Francis DeSales 7:54.33
7a Medina 7:47.16
7b Worthington Kilbourne 7:54.51
8a Grove City Central Crossing 7:55.38
8b Reynoldsburg 7:51.46

Prediction

Look for Cleveland Heights to repeat as the Division I State Champion, with two legs splitting 1:52 or 1:53 they are the team to beat. The next three spots will likely be Centerville, Medina and Reynoldsbur in some order. Reynoldsburg ran strong through the entire season, and seem to have just run the last couple of weeks to win or place, but not to set blazing times. Reynoldsburg will be ready to roll this weekend. Centerville is starting to drop their time even when not racing teams the last couple of weeks. Centerville has ran only once against a team on this list outside of their region, and that was back in early may at the Jesse Owens meet at this very stadium. Medina races when they need to and they will be in position to race this weekend. Look for the next three spots to fall in this order: Second, Centerville, because they finally get to race top teams, third, Medina, because they get in the race and and Donny Roys rolls since this will be his only event of the night, and then fourth Reynoldsburg

UPDATED 6/5 WILDCARD: Strongsville, a reliable source has said that Kendall Gregory will be on the team, so look for Strongsville to be in the mix and capture a spot on the top half of the podium

7 705 Terrell Carter, Columbus Independence 12 14.67
8 25 Johnnie Legrair, Copley 12 14.32

Prediction
Heat 1

This will be the tougher of the two heats to get out in, but look for Willey, Somerville, Curbow to be locks to advance. The fourth and final spot will come down to Belen and Goffena, with Belen coming out on top.

Heat 2

Top four should go Peoples, Moore, Kemmerer and Carter.

Finals

Willey, Somerville, Curbow and Peoples have the best shot at coming home with the title. Peoples will likely defend his crown, with Curbow right behind him. Somerville will also likely be a step ahead of Willey to take home the bronze.

WILDCARD: Belen, if he is fully healthy and ready to go.

7 611 Anthony Chandler, Zanesville 12 11.06
8 735 Lyndon Anderson, Elyria 10 10.73

Prediction
Heat 1

Posey ran into a strong headwind at Dayton, so in Columbus look for him to be ready to put up a good mark. Barber, Isles and Hoppel are likely to advance also.

Heat 2

Look for Heriot, Allen, Bryson and and then Mays to make it to the finals.

Finals

Heriot and Isles have been running fast times this whole year, look for these two to battle it out, with Heriot coming out on top. Bryson is ready to roll, and will likely be right behind the two front runners. If there is a headwind Posey will have a shot to place high because of his strength, but if there isn't wind look for him to be in the middle of the pack.

WILDCARD: Owens, he could get geared up to get some team points and make the finals, and then anything is fair game.

6 West Chester Lakota West 1:27.29
7 Wooster 1:28.71
8 Piqua 1:28.43

Prediction

If Trotwood has clean hand offs they win by dipping into the low 1:26's. Cleveland Heights, Lakota West and St. Edward all have a shot to take the crown from "The Wood" if Trotwood has any miscues.

WILDCARD: Dunbar, they are ready to show that they are the best 4x200m Relay team in the Southwest

1600m

1a 808 Makorobondo Salukombo, Lakewood 12 4:17.39

8a 546 Ryan Hershner, Lexington 11 4:21.98
8b 952 Kyle Kling, Louisville 12 4:22.76

Prediction

This race will likely come down to Neff and Miller. Both have put up impressive times this year and will be gunning for the title. Look for Neff to out kick everyone and win by going right around 4:10 or 4:11. The rest of the people on the podium will be a toss up, but keep an eye on Fallon and Salukombo.

WILDCARD: Trick, if he gets in the race early, he will put up a good showing in Columbus.

5 Columbus Whetstone 42.33
6 Lakewood St. Edward 42.41
7 North Olmsted 42.55
8 Wooster 42.54

Prediction

This is going to be a fast race and a tight race. Look for a shoot out between Gahanna Lincoln and Lebanon. That's right, Lebanon. If Lebanon has clean hand offs, they win, if they falter at all though, look for Gahanna, with speedster Blake Heriot on the team, to take home the gold. Places three through five will go to Whitmer, Whetstone, and Cleveland Heights, but in any order.

WILDCARD: Wayne, coach Mike Fernandez knows how to get his student athletes ready, plus they have a sophomore stud in Demoye Bogle

8 348 Donte Lyons, Trotwood-Madison 12 49.00

Prediction
Heat 1

Barber, Henry, Cowsette, Walker make it out

Heat 2

Posey, Gregory, Murdaugh, Cleveland, no surprises here.

Finals

Gregory is gearing up to try to set the state record, and he has an opportunity to do so, but he will have to leave it all on the track. Posey and Barber wil battle for second, and Posey will take home the silver with his great lean. Murdaugh finishes in fourth.

WILDCARD: Henry, who looks so effortless in the 400m, he may have to push himself though to place in the top three.

7 866 Kelby Rosengarten, Celina 12 38.80
8 989 Anthony Schrock, Wadsworth 10 38.77

Prediction
Heat 1

Willey, Curbow, Allen and Matthews all get in the race early and move onto Saturday night

Heat 2

Rispress, Peoples, Sommerville are locks, Goffena is a gamer and he moves on also.

Finals

This will be a race to watch as there are great athletes in this race. Willey is such a competitor that he will have a great shot at repeating. And he does repeat. Somerville, Peoples, Curbow and Allen all will compete for the next spots. Look for Somerville to get in the race early and take home the silver, with Allen in third and Curbow a respectable fourth.

WILDCARD: Rispress times dropped nearly a second from his PR at the regional, if he can keep that up he will make some noise on Saturday.

800m

1a 523 Sam Maynard, Medina 12 1:54.06
1b 280 Ryan Logan, Huber Heights Wayne 12 1:55.61
2a 2 Steven Testa, Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit 12 1:55.45

6b 616 Mike Rutherford, Columbus St. Francis DeSales 12 1:54.65
7a 838 Shawn Roberts, Centerville 11 1:55.36
7b 807 Tim Chippy, Middleburg Heights Midpark 12 1:54.92
8a 449 Sylvester Watts, Cleveland Heights 12 1:56.24
8b 153 Mike Knisley, Reynoldsburg 12 1:54.36

Prediction

Hall, if he is fully healthy, he wins it, flat out. Knisely has a tough shot starting from the outside, but this could keep him out of trouble through the first 400m, which would likely put him close behind Hall for second. Neff, if he has anything left after his mile he will be in the top three, he is just such a talented runner. Look for Maynard to finish fourth as his time has been steadily dropping from his conference meet on.

WILDCARD: Roberts, new to the open 800 this year, Roberts is still figuring out his race, if he does he has the foot speed to take a shot at finishing in the top three or four.

7 269 Demoye Bogle, Huber Heights Wayne 10 22.36
8 41 Phil Ferguson, Copley 12 21.85

Prediction
Heat 1

Bryson and Heriot will run to qualify. Depending on how fast Willey has to run to qualify in the 300h will determine if he can come back in the two 200m, my guess is that Willey has enough gas to make it in the finals of both the 200 and the 300h. Cunningham will also likely make the finals.

Heat 2

Allen, Posey, Callahan and Witherspoon advance to Saturday.

Finals

Bryson has the fastest time, although it is wind aided and Heriot is just .01 second behind him with a legal wind reading. Look for Heriot to take home the gold with Bryson a close second. Allen in thrid, followed by Callahan.

WILDCARD: Cunningham, he's been pretty consistent the last three weeks, look for him to get in the race and fly off of the curve.

3200m

1a 392 Doug Norris, Vandalia Butler 10 9:37.42
1b 536 Mike Heller, Stow-Munroe Falls 12 9:37.13

2b 151 Joe Miller, Toledo St. John's Jesuit 12 9:26.78

3b 914 Zach Wills, Mason 9 9:18.38

4b 335 Daniel Thaler, Cincinnati St. Xavier 12 9:33.60
5a 618 Stuart Edmonds, Twinsburg 11 9:30.67
5b 373 Nathan Corder, Pickerington North 12 9:41.37
6a 105 Mark Wieferich, Marietta 11 9:28.69
6b 738 Josh Tormasi, Massillon Perry 11 9:36.45
7a 200 Joseph Jackson, Hilliard Darby 12 9:42.69
7b 101 David Rafailedes, Massillon Jackson 12 9:38.87
8a 456 Chase Violet, Lima Shawnee 12 9:26.84
8b 917 Cory Irwin, Canal Winchester 12 9:45.94

Prediction

This is a race of names, Miller, Roys, Wills (all lined up next each other) along with Jackson, Rafailedes, and Violet. If you followed Cross Country or Track this year just a little bit you know everyone on the list. Wills runs with a confidence of a veteran, even though he is only a freshman. Roys won the State Cross Country meet this year, and Miller is just a stud. Look for these three distance stand outs to be together after Roeth takes the race out fast. How much faster can the freshman phenom go will be the question. Look for wills to run his race and take home the crown in the 3200m. Roys and Miller will battle for second with Miller coming out on top. Look for Violet to finish fourth.

WILDCARD: Thaler, second place at the State Cross Country meet has to be worth something...

6 Dayton Dunbar 3:16.16
7 Gahanna Lincoln 3:22.98
8 Hamilton 3:20.02

Prediction

Again this is Trotwood's race to lose, almost 2 second faster than the rest of the state. Dunbar will be gunning for the wood again, but will not get them in time and will likely finish thrid behind a tough anchor from Strongsville. Cleveland Heights will be a factor in the race and will likely finish fourth.

WILDCARD: Gahanna Lincoln, Heriot and Curbow, need I say more?

1 936 Drew Ebersole, Grafton Midview 12 178'00"

7 450 Mike Gritz, Lyndhurst Brush 12 162'04"
8 747 Kenny Anunike, Lewis Center Olentangy 12 161'04"

Prediction

Burden is the favorite as he is almost 10' ahead of the rest of the state. Burden will look to get the magical 200' mark and will have a shot if the wind plays to his favor. Ebersole is a strong contender to win if Burden has an off day, but he will likely finish second, followed by Ferguson. Hilbert throws well at Jesse Owens and will get accustomed to his new home ring by finishing fourth.

WILDCARD: Longo, if he relaxes and finishes his throw he can go 180'+.

15 109 Cody Westbrook, Marietta 11 6'07.00"
16 838 Justin Steigerwald, Cincinnati Oak Hills 12 6'07.00"

Prediction

Kynard led the nation indoors by going 7'3.75" so there is a big jump in Kynard and under the right conditions he could challange for the State Record of 7'2.25". Reed, Belen and King will challange for the second through fourth, but look for the order to be as previously stated.

WILDCARD: Westbrook, he's gone 6'10", and if he is clean he could take a shot at being top three.

1 111 Tiron Jester, Bedford 12 22'07.75"

7 184 Carlin Isles, Massillon Jackson 12 22'04.50"
8 445 Shaun Joplin, Sylvania Southview 11 22'10.50"

Prediction

Ohio has four 23' long jumpers, and two of them are in this competition. Look for Isles to hold of Peoples, with the two of them going 1-2. Albright and Joplin are knocking on the door of 23' and should go 3-4, look for Joplin to go home with the bronze and Albright with a fourth place medal.

WILDCARD: Kynard, he has hops, enough said.
