Youngstown State Open / High School Meet #1 - Review

Ronald Bright of Maple Heights High School took home the win in the High Jump with an impressive 6-04.00 effort.  Bright's mark is currently good for #3 on the 2017 Ohio Top Performers List.

The Youngstown State Open / High School Meet #1 took place this past weekend at the WATTS Indoor Track Facility on the campus of Youngstown State University.  The meet consisted of some thrilling competition and terrific sportsmanship from the athletes who participated.  Despite it being in the early stage of the Indoor season, there were many strong performances in both the track and the field events.

Notably, Jordan Geist from Pennsylvania's Knoch High School claimed a U.S. leading mark of 72-9.75 in the Shot Put.  In addition to his stellar Shot Put performance, Geist placed 2nd overall in the Weight Throw finals to Medina High School's Jacob Wickey.  Wickey claimed the victory with his 76-10 mark, while Geist put forth a 73-3 effort. Wickey's massive throw represented a personal best for him in the event and it was also good for the country's top Weight Throw performance this season. In boys track action, Zavien Parker of Pickerington Central High School took home the 200m win in a blazing time of 22.34.  Parker and his teammates from Pickerington Central ran away from their competition in the 4 x 400m relay, as they captured top honors in 3:27.50.

In girls action, McKenzie Long of Pickerington Central took victories in both the 200m (25.04) and the 60m (7.70).  Not far behind Long in the 200m finals were Jaydan Wood (also of Pickerington Central and in 25.40), Ke'Aijhan Strong of Tuslaw High School in 25.78 and Mia Knight of Beachwood High School in 25.85.  Additionally, Pennsylvania stand-outs Lauren Finikiotis (from Oakland Catholic HS) and Riley Kwiatkowski (from Greensburg Salem HS) won the 1600m and 3200m respectively with times of 5:13.18 (Finikiotis) and 11:13.35 (Kwiatowski).

The impressive performances noted above are just a sample of the many that took place throughout the event.  All elite performances and results for the entire meet can be located on the results tab from the main MileSplit Ohio page.  Finally, a special thanks goes out to Phil Grove who provided coverage on behalf of MileSplit Ohio.  Check out Grove's fine work in both the photo section and video section of our site.
