Brodey Hasty Goes US No. 1 4:03.26 In Pro Mile At Dr. Sander Invitational

Brentwood (TN) Cross Country Club's Brodey Hasty didn't get the sub-4 mile effort he was looking for at the Dr. Sander Invitational on Saturday at the Armory in New York, but he may get one more chance next week.

The high school senior and University of Oregon signee went a new US No. 1 time of 4:03.26, finishing 13th out of 17 competitors. Nike Oregon Projects' Craig Engels, a recent Ole Miss grad, went 3:57.35 to win the field, while four others broke four minutes, including Oregon senior Sam Prakel, who went 3:59.56.

Hasty's splits went like this:

  • 31.79
  • 31.13
  • 30.80
  • 30.89
  • 29.94
  • 30.14
  • 29.56
  • 29.07

In the fourth heat, Oregon freshmen Cooper Teare and Reed Brown both broke four minutes, with Reed doing it for the first time indoors and second overall, while Teare earned his coveted trip under four minutes after four unsuccessful bids as a senior for St. Joseph Notre Dame (CA) High last year during the outdoor season. Reed finished third and went 3:59.05, while Teare followed in 3:59.29.

But Hasty may have a quick turnover in his next race.

Officials for the NYRR Millrose Games -- specifically those who hand out invitations for the prestigious high school mile races -- were likely eyeing Hasty's performance closely to see where his effort stood in a field of professionals.

Hasty negative split 1:58.71 over his final four laps, giving an indication that the senior is ready.

After an outing such as this, Hasty could get an invitation to the boys mile field at the Millrose Games next week, a source familiar with the entry process told me earlier this week.

As it stands, the top four milers entering the Millrose Games mile on Feb. 3 are McDonogh School's Dalton Hengst, Bishop Shanahan's Josh Hoey, Hasty's teammate Scott Thompson and Loudoun Valley's Sam Affolder
