Pendulum Swings John Carroll's Way In Decisive Fifth Frame At Ursuline

Jessica Hammer and the Blue Streaks had to go the distance to put away Ursuline Wednesday night
Two giant momentum swings Wednesday evening occurred for the JCU Volleyball team in a non-conference match-up at Ursuline College.

The first swung the pendulum to Ursuline's side, as what seemed like a likely sweep was extended to the full five games.

The pendulum swung back to the side of the visiting Blue Streaks in the decisive fifth game, however, as John Carroll gathered itself and prevailed by a 15-10 score to claim its third victory of 2009 and even its season mark at 3-3.

The Blue Streaks had a strong showing in the first two games and appeared to be making quick work of its evening in Pepper Pike, But after cruising to wins of 25-16 and 25-14 in the opening two sets, JCU found itself in a dogfight in game three. Ursuline managed to comeback for a thrilling 29-27 triumph, then used that momentum to blow past the Streaks in game four, 25-19.

The Streaks never trailed in the final frame, rolling out to an 8-5 lead at the switch of sides, then scored six of the next nine points to take a commanding 14-8 lead. Ursuline staved off two match points before Meredith McDiarmid (Strongsville, OH, St. Joseph Academy) put away the final point for John Carroll.

The Blue Streaks had a solid night offensively with three attackers registering double digit kills. Sophomore Kerry Fox (Western Springs, IL, Lyons Township) led the way with 17 kills, along with seniors MaryEileen Dalton (Chicago, IL, St. Ignatius Prep) and Laura Isbell (San Diego, CA, Cathedral Catholic) collecting 15 and 14 kills, respectively.

McDiarmid also had an impressive evening, recording a season-high 50 assists for the match to go along with six kills and a team-high 20 digs.

Defensively, senior libero Celia Mastroine (Orrville, OH, Orrville) finished right behind McDiarmid in digs with 19, followed by Isbell with 16, and freshman Jessica Hammer (Moreland Hills, OH, Gilmour Academy) with 15.
