Women Eager for Regional

Wed, Nov, 11 | Women's Cross Country

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio- The Bowling Green State University women's cross country will head to Bloomington, Indiana on Saturday for the Division I Great Lakes regional meet.
The two top teams and the four top individuals will move on to the National Championship on November 23 at Terre Haute, Indiana. The NCAA Division I track and field subcommittee will select 13 at-large teams as well to complete the field.
Bowling Green, which finished seventh at the Mid-American Conference Championship on October 31, will compete against some very tough competition on Saturday.
“The regional meet is always great competition and we look forward to competing in it each year,” head coach Cami Wells said. “The competition level is high but we participate against very strong competition all season.”
Six Big Ten teams are ranked in the Great Lakes Region. Michigan, which is first in the region, is considered the 23rd best team nationally and Michigan State, which is second in the region, is viewed as the 26th best team nationally by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Indiana (4th), Ohio State (5th), Purdue (8th) and Wisconsin (13th) also represent the Big Ten in the Great Lakes region rankings.
Five MAC teams Miami (Ohio) (6th), Toledo (7th), Akron (10th), Central Michigan (14th) and Kent State (15th) are in the rankings.
Also ranked are Notre Dame (3rd), Butler (9th), Dayton (11th) and Marquette (12th).
After its seventh place performance at the MAC Championship, the Falcons will look to give their best effort on Saturday.
“(Our goal is) to have each person race to their potential and finish the season with our best team effort,” Wells said.
“The MAC meet finish was good motivation to finish off the regional meet like they are all capable of racing.”
For seniors Andrea Pereira de Almeida and Carly Wells, it could be the final time that they run as Falcons.
“It is emotional every time we have seniors racing in their final meet,” Wells said. “It is extra motivation for them and for their teammates to race well too and send them out on a high note.
“Andrea and Carly are wonderful young women who have added so much to this program over the years and we all want to see them have the best races they can run to finish off their cross country careers in the right way this weekend.”
Juniors Heather Conger, Sally Kandie, Barbara Powers and Ashley Fischer will also compete in the 6K race along with freshman Abby Koch.
