For JCU Men's Track & Field, The Kids Are Allright In Season Opener

Tony Mihalich was part of a cavalcade of top performers for the Blue Streaks in JCU's season-opening competition
To paraphrase The Who, the John Carroll track & field kids were allright in their collegiate debut
Saturday afternoon at the 2010 Baldwin-Wallace Mid-January Meet.

Results

Although unscored from a team standpoint, the Blue Streaks had enough solid performances to merit consideration for a successful meet.

In the dashes, freshman Bill Zaccardelli posted the best timeof any 55-meter competitor in the preliminaries with a mark of 6.63. Although he was a fraction faster in the final (6.62), he was edged out for top honors and took third.

Veteran Tony Mihalich was posted a strong finish in his final, crossing the line in 52.67 to place fourth in the 400-meter dash.

Sophomore Aaron Sharp placed seventh in the 500-meter run (1:10.68) and Anthony Colbert was eighth in the 800-meter run (2:06.84).

In the 1000-meter run, JCU had two top eight placers. Sophomore Jake Smith was fourth in 2:44.70, while newcomer Ross Bernard was eighth in 2:56.56.

Denny Love and Mike Hlatky were the dynamic duo in the 55-meter hurdles. Love was second (8.03) and Hlatky was sixth (8.44) in the preliminaries before placing fourth (8.24) and fifth (8.74) in the final, respectively.

Hlatky also earned a share of second place in the high jump, clearing 1.88 meters (6-02).

The 4 x 200 quartet was the top performing relay on the opening weekend of the season. Zaccardelli, Love, Colbert and Matt Mihalich raced to fourth place in 1:35.91.

In the field events, Lou Galiano was fourth in the shot put (14.09 meters / 46-02.75), while rookie Vince Kopen tied for seventh in the pole vault (3.45 meters / 11-03.75).

In the long jump, freshman Mike Minjock and senior RK Glover both placed in the top five. Minjock covered 6.39 meters (20-11.75) to finish third, while Glover was fifth was his mark of 6.15 meters (20-02.25).

Glover also led a parade of four Blue Streaks among the top eight in the triple jump. Glover was fourth (12.86 meters / 42-02.25), Hlatky and Kyle Fiegel tied for fifth (12.11 meters / 39-08.75), and Stephen Kedzuf was eighth (11.96 meters / 39-03.00).
