The Bowling Green State University men's and women's cross country teams resume their 2010 schedule tomnorrow (Saturday, Sept. 11) when they host the 24th annual Mel Brodt Invitational.

The action begins early, with the women's 5K race beginning at 10:45 a.m. and the men's 8K race following at 11:30.

Unlike last Friday's dual meet with Toledo, this event will be held on the Forrest Creason Golf Course adjacent to Bowling Green State University.  Maps of both the women's and men's courses can be found within the program linked on the sidebar of this page.  Both races will begin near the 14th tee area next to Stadium Drive, across from Doyt L. Perry Stadium.  The finish line will be in the same area as last Friday's races -- to the east of Perry Stadium.

Each team will be facing six other schools in the meet; one will be an NCAA Division I school, while the others will be from the NCAA Division II and III ranks, as well as from the NAIA.

Joining the Falcon men will be the Flyers from the University of Dayton.  Dayton comes into the meet ranked 11th in the Great Lakes Region in the preseason poll taken by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA).  Like BGSU, Dayton has one meet under their belt, placing second in the Flyer 5K Challenge.  Other teams participating in the men's 8K run are the University of Findlay, Ohio Northern, Heidelberg, Huntington and Siena Heights.

Those five teams will also bring women's team to compete against the Orange and Brown.  The BGSU women's Division I opponent will be the Cleveland State Vikings.  The Vikings opened their season last week with a fifth place finish in the six-team Flyer 5K Challenge.

Asked about the competition BGSU will face on Saturday, head coach Cami Paulson said, "Dayton has a very strong team, and that will serve as great competition for our top runners this weekend.  The men's competition is solid across the board so we expect to be challenged and look forward to racing against a quality field to continue to become stronger as a team."

Paulson added, "
On the women's side the competition will be solid but not as competitive as
the men's meet.  We want to compete well against the field and are looking
for the team title tomorrow."

The Falcons look to rebound after a disappointing start to the season.  Both the men's and women's team fell to Toledo in the dual meet held on the BGSU campus last Friday.  This week, the women will run the same 5K distance before moving on to the typical 6K races beginning next week.  For the men, however, the team faces a bump in distance, moving from 5K to the normal 8K they will face most of the season.

Paulson noted, "The typical distance the men race is an 8K, so training is always geared to an 8K distance.  Last weekend, we raced a 5K just to get back into racing mode, but the challenges of an 8K are very different from a 5K race.  We are looking forward to our first 8K and expect to have a strong team performance."

The Falcons are eager to race again and are focused on doing so with more aggressiveness and confidence, according to Paulson.
