NEW ORLEANS, LA -- The University of Toledo women's cross country team is back in the NCAA Division I national rankings for the seventh season in the past 11 years. The first poll of the 2010 cross country season was released on Monday with the Rockets receiving six votes and placing them in a tie for 35th in the nation with Ohio State University. In 2009, the Rockets entered the polls at the end of September with a No. 36 ranking for two weeks, peaking at the No. 32 spot.
The highest ranking the Rockets have enjoyed in the program's history was No. 26 on October 31, 2002 after spending that entire season in the national rankings and winning their second-straight MAC title. The Rockets are looking to equal or surpass that ranking this fall as they head towards the Mid-American Conference Championships and a potential bid to the NCAA Championships.
Toledo has appeared in the national rankings numerous times in the past decade (2000-2004; 2009-2010). The only other MAC schools to appear in the national rankings since 2000 are Ball State (2000, 2002-2003), Miami (2008, 2010) and Akron (2005). Noteably, from Ohio, the only other school to be nationally-ranked is Ohio State (2009-2010).
The Rockets are currently ranked No. 5 in the Great Lakes Region, which is their highest ranking since 2009 when they peaked at No. 4 in the region.
Mid-American Conference rival, Miami (Ohio) is also receiving votes in the national poll and is ranked No. 41. The RedHawks are also ranked right behind the Rockets in the region at No. 6.
