The Bowling Green State University track and field team reaches the pinnacle of its season this week when the Falcons travel to DeKalb, Ill. for the 2011 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

The three-day meet, which stretches from Thursday to Saturday (May 12-14), incorporates 18 individual events with two relays and the heptathlon.  Bowling Green will search for its first upper-division finish since 1998 and 1999, when the team placed third and sixth in back-to-back championship meets.

This year's championship will be the Falcons' fifth under head coach Cami Paulson.  In Paulson's first year, BGSU tied for its best finish by place (seventh) and scored its highest point total (54) since 1999.  In 2011, the Falcons look to rebound from last year's 12th place finish, in which the team scored only nine points.

Jessie Rowland, the 2011 MAC indoor weight throw champion, will set the tone for Bowling Green.  Her best outdoor event, the hammer throw, leads off the individual portion of this year's championship meet when it gets underway at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday.

Rowland is currently 19th overall in the NCAA's Division I East Region and fourth in the MAC with a season-best 57.68 meter toss.  Virtually assured of a berth in the NCAA East Regional, Rowland will attempt to become BGSU's first outdoor champion since Kerri McClung won the shot put in 2005.

Later in the day, Rowland joins Paige Lane and Anna Pomento in the javelin throw.  She will then compete alongside Ashley Harris in the shot put on Friday afternoon and finally concludes her week with an appearance in the discus, as she competes with teammates Harris and Brooke Pleger.  Rowland threw a career-best 45.48m in the discus last weekend at the Toledo Invitational.

Also on Thursday, Christina Gagliardo represents the Falcons in the pole vault, while three BGSU athletes compete in the 10,000 meter run.  In that event, the final one of the first day, Abby Koch runs with Megan Kelsey and Taylor Stichter.  Koch set a personal-record time of 36:37.33 at the Drake Relays.  This ranks seventh among the athletes slated to run.

Friday's action includes the aforementioned shot put (3:00 p.m.), as well as the long jump.  The lone track final on the second day is the 3000 meter steeplechase, which begins at 5:55 p.m. and includes Barbara Powers among the entrants.

Seven preliminary track events take place on Friday, and those begin with the 1500 meter run.  Also included in Friday's preliminaries are the 800 meters, the 100- and 400-meter hurdles, and the three sprints (100-, 200- and 400-meters).

The final day of competition includes the championship races in eight individual track events -- the seven whose prelims are run on Friday plus the 5000 meters -- and both relays.  The final three field events (discus, triple jump, high jump) also take place on Saturday.

At this time, it has not been determined if live stats will be available during the meet.  If so, they can be accessed through either BGSUFalcons.com or through the championship meet page at mac-sports.com.  If not, complete results and a full recap will be available after the conclusion of competition on each day of the meet at BGSUFalcons.com.
