The Bowling Green State University track and field team completed the first day of the 2011 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in ninth place after scoring eight points over a combined four events.

On Thursday (May 12) in DeKalb, Ill., the Falcons began the three day meet by competing in three field events and the 10,000 meter run.

Jessie Rowland earned six of the team's eight points with two sixth-place finishes in the day's throwing events. In the javelin, Rowland posted a mark of 36.54 meters (119-10). She was joined in the javelin throw by Paige Lane and Anna Pomento. Lane placed 15th after a 32 meter throw, while Pomento's distance was a career-best 30.43 meters (99-10).

Rowland also scored points in the hammer throw. Her best toss in six attempts was 55.16 meters (181-00), and that throw earned three points for the Falcons. Brooke Pleger eclipsed her previous career-best mark and earned two points by throwing the hammer 53.30 meters (174-10). She finished seventh overall.

Three Falcons ran in the 10,000 meter race. The team's top runner was Abby Koch, who crossed the finish line in 39:17.71. Megan Kelsey followed with a final time of 41:00.57, while Taylor Stichter completed the 10K in 43:14.86.

After the first day, the Falcons trail Western Michigan by one point and Eastern Michigan by two. Both Toledo and Ohio University are also within ten points.

Bowling Green will have the chance to expand their point total in one track and two field events on Friday. Athletes will compete in the finals of the 3000 meter steeplechase, as well as the shot put and long jump.

Friday's action also includes seven preliminary-stage track events. Those events are the sprints, hurdles, and mid-distance races.
