Brecksville-Broadview Heights girls track team sets Division I regional record in relay: High School Roundup

The girls on the Brecksville-Broadview Heights 4x800-meter relay team had their best feet forward Wednesday night.

The Bees earned a trip to next week's Division I state meet in Columbus, clocking a regional record time of 9:12.40 at Austintown Fitch. Seniors Lauren Greenlee, Jillian Bajaksouzian, Megan Beaver and Veronica Thompson put themselves in the record book. Buchtel was second in 9:15.60, as the Griffins also earned a trip to the state meet.

After three events on the girls' side, North Canton Hoover leads with 19.5 points, with Solon second at 12 and Brecksville and Willoughby South tied at 10.

Willoughby South senior Maria Romano won the shot put with a 40-1 effort.

Hoover senior Maddie Morrow won the high jump at 5-10.

With senior Reggie Jagers winning the discus with a throw of 179-10, Solon led the boys' standings with 19 points after four event finals. The Comets also got points as junior Darian Hicks finished fifth in the long jump (21-8 1/4) and senior Karl Pierce took fourth in the pole vault (14-0).

Twinsburg senior Christian Moermond won the pole vault on fewer misses at 14-0, and Firestone senior Evan Payne won the long jump with a leap of 22-11 1/4. Nordonia seniors Troy Mulhall, Alex Wilson, Patrick Osborne and John Ciocca won the 4x800 relay in 7:50.51.

Mentor, Kenston and Stow also qualified for the state meet in that event.

Nordonia, Firestone, Twinsburg and Massillon Jackson are tied for second place with 10 points each.

Amherst Division I regional After three finals, Avon Lake and Sylvania Northview are tied with 18 points in the girls team standings. The Shoremen got their points in field events, as junior Christine Bohan was second in the high jump (5-2) and third in the shot put (40-33/4). Senior teammate Sarah Alfen was fifth in the shot at 38-6.

Bay senior Amelia Strickler won the shot put with a toss of 42-11/2. Medina's 4x800 relay team of junior Alexis Smith, freshman Sarah Pack and seniors Taylor Wickey and Anna Boyert had a winning time of 9:12.02. Also qualifying for state in the 4x800 are Magnificat and Rocky River.

St. Ignatius won the boys 4x800, as senior Mitch Baum, junior Vince Bartram, junior Jack Miller and senior Drew Galang covered the distance in 7:52.87. Brunswick and Medina also qualified for state in the 4x800.

The Wildcats have 16 points after four events to trail Toledo Whitmer by one.

St. Edward junior Aaron Zedella won the discus with a throw of 185-10, and Midpark junior Aaron Owens took the pole vault at 15-7. Midpark has 15 points and St. Edward has 14.

Navarre Division III regional Gilmour Academy won the girls 4x800 relay as junior Meghan Pryatel, freshman Caitlin Whetstone, sophomore Halle Markel and junior Alexis Anton finished in 9:33.51. The Lancers are tied for third place with Sugarcreek Garaway with 10 points each after three events. Berkshire finished third to qualify for Columbus, as freshmen Melissa and Suzanne Koziol, along with sophomore Danielle Young and freshman Christin Dornback, won in 9:43.43.

Rootstown senior Ashleigh Pickens won the high jump with a regional mark of 5-3/4. McDonald has 15 points and Rootstown 11 in the team standings.

East Canton leads the boys after four events with 18 points, followed by Cortland Maplewood with 16 and Cuyahoga Heights with 11. Junior Ricky Rospierski took fourth in the pole vault (13-6) for the Redskins, while senior D. J. Kleppel was fifth at 13-0.

The Gilmour 4x800 team qualified for the state meet as it finished fourth. Sophomore Alex Clapacs, freshman Brandon Phillips, junior Charles Hoge and sophomore Paul-Henry Schoenhagen won in 8:09.52.

Softball

Black River 11, Canton Central Catholic 6 The Pirates scored six runs in the top of the second and five in the fifth to win the Division III regional semifinal at Massillon. They will play the winner of today's East Palestine-Warren Champion game Saturday at noon.
