Later this week athletes will converge on Eugene, Ore., for the United States track and field trials, which begin in earnest on Friday. An estimated 1,000 athletes will compete for roughly 135 spots on the United States Olympic team in what some call the greatest 10-day drama in sports: a concentration of great athletes in a competition where every step, every throw, every jump has no margin for error.
