Division 3 Regional Preview

As a coach and athlete in the state of Ohio, I have spent many years trying to learn who I would be going up against at big races. I wanted to know how each person ran and what were their strengths and weaknesses. I would often do my own little meet previews where I would scour the internet for any resources I could find to help me on my quest. I have decided that as an author on this site it would be nice to provide the members and nonmembers alike with a peek at this weekend's races. I will preface these insights by saying that I do not necessarily think the exact order will be what I put up here, but rather find it to be a statistical analysis of what some expectations may be like for this Saturday. I also do not use season PR's to determine athlete rankings, as I have found this to be a very inaccurate method of prediction. Instead I look at trends and averages, much like the course rating system, in order to determine a prediction. Please note that the times I have listed aren't necessarily what I think the times will be. I just have them used as a way to rank all the runners. I will be ranking top 6 teams as well as top 25 individuals, as this will give the best look at which teams and individuals will have a shot at making it to state. I hope to get some comments going as well, because discussion makes it more fun for everyone!

I like Seneca East and Maplewood to duke it out for this region. The last spot will be close, but I would bank on the outstanding history of McDonald to pull through and land them a spot racing next Saturday. Stockmaster is having an outstanding year and I don't see this week being the start of a downfall. Good luck to everyone on Saturday!

The numbers on this one are something I am not necessarily in agreement with. I like Columbus Grove, but the computer doesn't. I don't want to stray too much from the statistics, so I will leave them where they are, but I think they are definitely in the mix after a district title last week. Lima CC gets a boost from two in the top ten, but could be out of luck if their 4 and 5 are way back. Individually, those Coldwater boys are tough and I am expecting a little hardware to travel back home there.

Should have two battles here, as Fort Frye and Garaway try to win the title, and then there are quite a few teams vying for those last two spots. Should be just as interesting for the individual title, as those couple points up front could determine who wins the team title as well. I expect to see some exciting finishes and card counting by coaches in this one.

This region should be Summit's to lose. They have run extremely well all year, beating numerous higher division teams. They also boast Junior Mason Moore, one of the top individuals in the state and the pre-race favorite. Regional stalwarts Anna and Russia should also get out. What will be interesting is  to see how Versailles does in the post-Prakel era.

Gilmour and Aquinas should be safe here, but after that it is a crapshoot. There are then 4 teams that could finish within 15 points of each other for those last two spots. Individually, I like Allison Parks to continue her recent trend and take home the title. There should be a good pack of five or so girls through those first two miles, though, and that could make for an interesting finish.

This is a three-way race for the team title. Liberty Center has a nice pack and good front runners, Coldwater has exceptional front runners but a fifth that is a little back, and Minster has an exceptional pack. Three different teams with equal chances to win here. I like the Coldwater girls to go 1-2, like they have done often this season.

Garaway and Columbus Academy both look like locks to make it to state, but some questions still remain about who will take the last spot. Individually it will be really close to call, as a handful of girls have run at or near the same times. The question will be does the tough Pickerington course have a say in who makes it and who doesn't?

Summit looks to dominate in both races as the girls have a top notch squad as well. If Olivia Klosterman or Ellie Adams takes home the individual title we could see a regional sweel for Summit. As a team I like Russia and am comfortable with Versailles, but it is too close to call for that last spot. One good or bad race by someone not on one of these two teams could even make the point difference. It is that close.
