Ohio State Meet - D2 Girl's Preview

Here is a look at what to expect in the Division 2 Girl’s Events.

Seven teams return to State from 2013 in the 4x800.  Last year’s #2 Akron’s SVSM returns 3 runners and qualified with a time 9:37.58.  Two teams return with all four runners from 2013.  Coldwater, #4 last year, qualified with a 9:43.05.  Last year’s #5, Alter, also has a four girls back and has the 2nd fastest qualifying time of 9:34.34.  The fastest time coming in to the finals is that of West Homes.  They ran 9:27.15 with So. Hannah Schlegal joining returners So. Hannah Clark and Sr.’s Alexis Kandel and Emily Molner.  West Homes is the team to beat.

The 100m Hurdles will be very competitive.  The #1 qualifier is Jr. Jazmin Smith of Cincinnati North College Hill.  Her 14.85 is just faster than Sr. Meredith Fennel of Canal Fulton Northwest.  She comes in with a time of 14.94, but has run 14.80. .  So. Peyton Lee of Napoleon was 4th last year in 14.98.  She qualified in 15.14, but has run 14.90.  #6 last year was Desitny King of Streetsboro (15.19).  She qualified in 15:26.  Ciera Rose is the 3rd returner, placing 7th last year (15.29).  She qualified in 15.08.

The field for the girl’s 100 is led by last year’s 7th place finisher (12.59), Sr. Kylie Goldsmith of Westfall.  Her 12.09 is the #14 time in the State.  Based solely on the Regional qualifying times, just .69 seconds separates all 16 qualifiers.  .52 seconds separates the #2 qualifying time from the #16 time. So. Michaela Butler of  Findlay Liberty-Benton has the 2nd fastest qualifying time, running 12.26.

In the 4x200 Meadowdale should win it all.  The qualified out of Regionals with a 1:41.95 and their 1:41.46 is the States #6 time.  They are the only team under 1:42.  The number two qualifying team is Akron Buchtel  with a time of 1:43.53

The girl’s 1600 features the #2, 4, 7 and 14th ranked runners in the State.  7 girls return from last year’s field led by defending champion, Jr. Sarah Kanney of Coldwater (4:55.26).  Kanney has the #14 time in the State with a 5:03.08.  Last year’s #13 finisher, Jr. Sammy Bockoven of CVCA has the #2 time in the State with a 4:56.73.  She is followed by Jr. Taylor Vernot of Wauseon.  Vernot is ranked #4 in the State with a time of 4:59.03.  Sr. Michelle McKinney is ranked #7 in the State with a 5:00.70 and should go sub 5.  This should be an exciting race and should come down to the final 200m between Kanney, Vernot, McKinney and Bockoven.

Three teams return in the 4x100.  Nine teams are under 50 and are only separated by .80 seconds.  This is anyone’s race and will come down to lane qualification for the finals and to exchanges.  The fastest time in qualification is Northwest-Canal Fulton and they own the #13 time in the State with a 49.18.  Galion is just behind them with a 49.24.  The 16th fastest time in the State.

The 400 features the #2, 8, 9, 11 and 12th ranked runners in the State.  It will very competitive with the podium nod to Meadowdale’s Jr. Oksana Lawrence who is the defending champion..  She ran 54.04 in winning last year and her #2 ranked time is 54.59.  She should run under 54. Last year’s 5th place finisher (57.52), Sr. Olivia Behmeyer of New Richmond is ranked #8 in the State with a 56.14.  #9 ranked is Sr. Shyla Cummings of Cin. Finneytown (56.16).  #11 in the State is Sr. Deanna Geisicki of Independence (56.58).  #12 is Akron SVSM’s Jr. Imani Davis (56.59).

The 300 Hurdles features a close group of seven girls under 46.  Three of the girls return from last year, including last year’s #5, So. Jessica Eby of Orrville,  who has the 13th fastest tie in the State (44.47).  Eby’s time is followed by last year’s runner-up, Jr. Hanna Thomas of Valley View (44.73).  Thomas qualified with a 45.98.  The 3rd returner is last year’s #4, Sr. Jenna Quillen (45.30).  Quillen’s Regional time was 45.80.  Eby should win, but the other girls will make it close.

Senior Michelle McKinney of Eaton returns to defend her 800m title.  She ran 2:11.80 last year and comes in with a Regional time of 2:16.37.  Defiance Sr. Samantha Murray was 2nd last year in 2:11.97.  She ran 2:14.15 at Regionals and is ranked #13 in the State.  Sr.  Hanna Watts of Galia Academy comes into State with the #8 ranked time of 2:13.89.  Jr. Elissa Ellerbrock of Ottawa-Glandorf is ranked 16th in the State with a time of 2:14.83.  The race will be determined in the last 200.  The winner will have to run under 2:10.

The 200 will be close with 15 of the 16 qualifiers all running under 26.  One girl, Sr. Kylie Goldsmith of Williamsport Westfall has run under 25. Her 24.57 is ranked 5th in the State. With the exclusion of Westfall only .80 seconds separates all of the qualifiers.  So. Michaela Butler of Liberty-Benton has run 25.10, Sr. Sierra Willims of Clev. John F. Kennedy has run 25.09 and Jr Jasmine Smith of Cinci. North college Hill has run 25.00.

So. Mary Kate Vaughn of Oakwood is back to defend her title in the 3200.  She won last year in 10:45.47 and is ranked number two in the State with a run of 10:47.84.  Sr. Hanna Campbell, 2nd last year in 10:58 is ranked 3rd in the State and has run 10:49.03.  They are the only two girls under 11:00 and just may push each other under the State meet record of 10:43.32 set in 2012 by Emily Stites of Cinci. Wyoming.  Sr. Allison Sinning of Tipp City Tippecanoe has run 11:01.05 and Jr. Taylor Vernot of Wauseon has run 11:07.86.  They both may go under 11:00.

Meadowdale should defend their State 4x400 title.  Joining returners Jr. Allison Brown, Jr. Jamara Pettigrew and Sr. Oksana Lawrence is Jr. is Jr. Jalyn Underwood.  They have the #12 time in the State with a 3:56.47.  Two other teams, Cleveland Heights Beaumont and Versailles have both gone under 4:00.  Beaumont has run 3:58.97 and Versailles, 3:59.07.  Four other teams should go under 4:00 and vie for places on the podium: Gerard (4:00.28), CVCA (4:00.72), West Branch Beloit (4:00.89) and Oak Harbor (4:00.91).

Sr. Maddie Fischer of Minerva made the podium in 4th in 203 with a throw of 126-7.  She qualified this year with a throw of 121-6.  She will be pressed to be in the top five this year.  Fr. Lauren Jones of Garrettsville Garfield has thrown 137-2 and Jr. Jordan Porter of Chesapeake has thrown 136-00.  Three other girls come in with throws over 130.00; Jr. Edith Svonavec of Garrettsville Garfield  (130-07), Jr. Olivia Snyder, Navarre Fairless  (133-00) and Jr. Nicolette Kreatsoulas of Poland Seminary (133-5).

In the High Jump, 5-6 will win.  Last year’s 3rd place finisher (5-3), Hannah Bartlome of Vermillion comes in with a 5-4.  #6 last year, Sr. Maggie Loeffler of Bloom-Carrol has jumped 5-4. # 8 last year (5-0) Sr. Hannah Hall of New Richmond has jumped 5-6.  #12 Last year, So. Paula Wollenslegle has jumped 5-5.  Difficult to pick a winner.

The Long Jump should go to Sr. Hannah Bartlome of Vermillion.  She comes in with a leap of 183,but has gone 18-7.25.  Her nearest competitors have both jumped 17-6.75; So. Jamari McDonald of Springfield Kenton Ridge and Sr. Dev Bell of Gnadenhutten Indian Valley.  So. Ma'kayla Allen of Defiance has gone 17-6.25.

Jr. Edie Svonavec was 2nd last year in the Shot (45-9.50).  She will battle for the top spot on the podium year with Sr. Jordan PorterSvonavec is ranked 19th nationally with a throw of 47-6 and 2nd in Ohio.   Sr. Jordan Porter of Chesapeake, even though she qualified with a throw of 42-7.00, has gone 47-0 and is the State leader.  Her throw is ranked 16th nationally.  Sr. Jenni Rossi of Middletown Bishop Fenwick has thrown 44-4.25,   Sr. Laina Snyder of Millersburg West Holmes  42-7.50,  Sr. and Jr. Alexis Dowdy of Van Wert  42-10.25.

In the Pole Vault Allyson Simmons of  Fairless will defend her State title.  She won in 2013 with a vault of 12-5.25 and is ranked #1 in the State with a vault of 13-1.25, breaking Alyssa McBride of Bryan’s two year old OHSAA D2 record by .25.  The battle will be to see who is on the podium with Simmons.  Four other girls are over 11. Sr. Raeyn Gardner of Vincent Warren who has vaulted 11-3.00, Jr. Allison Plybon of Orrville 11-0.00, Jr. Maddy Reed of Piketon 11-0.0,and Sr. Maddie Jarrett of Orville 11-0.00.
