2014 State XC Season Preview - D3 Boy's and Girl's

D3 INDIVIDUAL BOYS

 

  

The boy's D3 division has six runners returning from last year's top 10, 14 of the top 20.  Maplewood Jr. Tristan Dahmen is the leading returnerfrom the 2013 OHSAA State Championships.  He ran 16:07.49.  As a 9th grader he ran 33rd (16:31.87).  Jon Anderson, a Sr. from Fort Frye, was less than 3 seconds back of Dahmen in 3rd last year, running 16:10.38.  As a sophomore, he ran 16:53.71 placing 55th.  

Seneca East Sr. Jared Stockmaster was 5th last year in 16:15.99.  Last year was his 3rd appearance at the State meet.  He ran 112th as a freshman (18:18.83) and 34th as a sophomore, improving to 16:32.06.  Of the D3 boys, he had the fastest time in 2013 with a 15:46.70.  That time ranks him 14th in the State based solely on times run in 2013.  He was also 10th in the D2 3,200 last spring (9:58.88).

Others to watch for may be Antwerp Jr. Sam Williamson, Sum. Co. Day Sr. Marion Moore and Con. Crestview Sr. Mycah Grandstaff.  Williamson was 10th last year (16:25.09) and ran 4th at State in the 1600 with a 4:22.27 and 12th in the 3200 with a 10:10.30.  Moore was 1st in the 1600 last spring with a 4:16.27.  Grandstaff was 3rd last spring in the 1600, running 9:31.57.

D3 BOY'S  TEAM

Just as it is difficult to predict Pre-season individuals, it is also difficult to place Pre-Season teams.  Based strictly on times run last season,  Last year's number four team, Summit Country Day may be atop the podium in Novmember.  Their top six runners all return.  They are led by Seniors Mason Moore (25th,16:46.06) and John Murdock (31st, 16:53.52).  There number three runner in 2013 was Jr. Will Mackey (41st, 17:00.44). So. Tullus Dean was their #4 runner (89th, 17:45.02) and Jr. Connor Shaw was their #5 scorer (101st, 17:54.01).  The teams #6 runner was Sr. Grady Stuckman (105th, 17:57.49)).

Pushing for the top spot also may be last year's runner up, Maplewood. They are the #3 team based upon individual times and lost only their #4 runner to graduation, Scott Rupe (82nd).  They are led by Jr. Tristan Dahmen (2nd,16:07.49).  Their number 2 and 4 runners last year were Sophomores Jake Hall (30th, 16:53.05) and Zach Leatherberry (83rd, 17:40.24) and their number 3 and 5 runners were Sr's  Derek Morrison (53rd, 17:08.88) and Charlie Woodrum (96th, 17:51.90)

Other contenders for the podium should be McDonald, Garaway and Liberty Center.  McDonald, last year's Champion will have a stong team again.  They lost last year's individual champion, Bobby Johnson, but return their #2-6 runners. Last year's number three team Garaway returns six of their runners, loosing only their top runner last year, Alex Shrock (7th).  Liberty Center was 6th last year, and returns their #2, 3,4 5 and 6 runners.

D3 INDIVIDUAL GIRL

The D3 gir'ls division will be very exciting to watch.  Eight of the top ten girl's return.  Liberty Center Sr. and two time State Champion, Brittany Atkinson will work hard to defend her title and may join an elite group of runners who have won three State Titles.  She won in 2013 with a time of 18:31.45. She won as a Freshman in 2011 with a time of 18:27.51 and was 2nd in 2012, running 18:06.67.  She is also the defending State D3 girl's 3200 champion running 10:53.48.

Coldwater Sr. Sarah Kanney will push Atkinson.  Kanney was 4th last year (18:51.13) and won the title in 2012, running 17:58.03.  Running alongside Atkinson and Kanney will be last years #3 runner, Col. Academy Sr. Julia Rizk.  Rizk ran 18:48.61.  She has been one of the strongest runners in the State over the last three years finishing 3rd last spring in the 1600 (5:05.87), 2nd in 2013 (4:59.95) and 9th as a freshman (5:15.27).  

Several other girl's may contend as well:  Jr. Rachel Wentworth of Garaway was 5th last year (18:53.31) and was 4th in the State 3200 (11:28.64).  Aquinas Jr. Athena Welsh was 6th last year (18:58.12) and had a strong spring winning the State 1600 (5:02.98) and finishing 2nd to Atkinson in the 3200 (11:16.43).  The other three top ten returners are #7 Sr. Emily Borchers of Russia (19:05.95), #8 Sr. Fallon Doyle of St. John Central (19:06.53) and #10 Sr. Jen Wisniewski of Independence (19:10.72).  Wisniewski's teammate, So. Dana Zaccardelli also returns.  She was 11th last year, less than 1 second back of Wisniewski (19:11.15).

D3 GIRL'S  TEAM

Liberty Center is the defending champion and one would expect them to contend for the top spot on the podium again this year..  They lost one girl from last year to graduation, their #2 runner Paige Chamberlain.  All of their other runners return.  They are led by last year's individual winner Sr. Brittany Atkinson (18:31.45).  They are young, the #2, 3, 4 and 6 runners are sophomores.  Jenna Vollmar (22nd, 19:36.51), Olivia Kundo (30th, 19:51.37), Cheryl Davenport (72nd, 20:34.30) and Hanna Knapp (127th, 22:09.14)..  Their #5 runner is Jr. Rachel Pinson (78th, 20:36.18).  They are ranked #2 in the Top Teams By Individual Times ranking from last year.  

Minster is ranked #1 in the Top Teams By Individual Times ranking.  They were number five at State last year and only lost their #7 runner, Olivia Enneking.  They did not have a top ten runner last year however, but will be led by So. Morgan Pohl who should be on the podium this year.  She was 14th last year. (19:17.85)  Their #2-6 runners are all underclassmen.  Jr. Kaci Barnhorst (37th, 19:58.09), Jr. Lisa Barlage (44th, 20:07,.39), Jr. Julia Slonkosky (62nd, 20:18.80), So. Ali Borgerding (74th, 20:32.57) and Jr. Katherine Burke (83rd, 20:47.20).

Gilmour Academy was 2nd last year and have the #3 ranking based upon the individual times.  They lost their #2 and 5 runners, Halle Markel and Madeline Krakonia.  They have three girls who were seperated by 8 seconds last year at State and who will contend for their top three spots.  Jr. Hannah Markel (28th, 19:45.68), Jr. Catherine Dolohant (29th, 19:48.83) and Sr. Caitlin Whetstone (32nd, 19:53.49).  Their 5th and 6th runners are both sophomores;  Bree Zedan (58th, 20:17.94) and Sydney Hlifka (91st, 20:59.99).

Coldwater, led by Sarah Kanney (4th, 18:51.13) heads the list of other teams that may get to the podium.  They lost last years #2 finisher, Christina Seas to graduation, but return their  their #2-7 runners.  Russia was 7th last year and is #5 in the Teams By Individual Times rankings.  They are led by Sr. Emily Borchers (7th, 19:05.95).  Mt. Gilead was 14th last year and are ranked #4.  Independence was 8th last year, with the #10 and 11 runners, Sr. Jen Wisniewski (10th, 19:10.72) and So. Dana Zaccardelli (11th, 19:11.15).  They are ranked 6th.
