D3 GIRLS
INDIVIDUAL RACE PREVIEW
Sr.'s Brittany Atkinson of Liberty Center and Sarah Kanney of Coldwater have provided us with perhaps the State's biggest rivalry over the last four years. Brittany won as a freshman. Sarah won as a Sophomore, with Brittany 2nd. Brittany won last year and Sarah was 4th. In the D3 rankings, Brittany is ranked #1 (17:34.10). Sarah, #2 (17:55.96). In the State overall rankings by time, Brittany is ranked #2 and Sarah is #4. Sarah won the Tiffin Regional. Brittany was just behind her. If I were to go on time alone this year, then the nod has to go to Brittany. Out of respect for both, I am not going to pick. They are both winners!
Garaway Jr. Rachel Wentworth should be in the #3 position. She is an experienced runner and even though she is ranked 5th in the D3 rankings by time, she won the Pickerington Regional and was 5th last year at State in 18:53.32. Jr. Athena Welsh of St. Thomas Aquinas should run 4th and will contend for the #3 spot. She is ranked 3rd in the D3 rankings and has an overall 15th State ranking (18:21.68). She was 1st in the Boardman Regional. Sr. Fallon Doyle of St. John's should be on the podium in the 5th spot. She is ranked 4th by time in the State with a 18:28.21 and 25th overall. All five of these girls are under the Milesplit National Elite: Gold Standard of 18:45.00.
Several other girls should also be on the podium. Sr. Emily Borchers of Russia was 7th last year (19:05.95). She is ranked 19th this season with a 19:19.45. Fr. Brittany Roth of Newcomerstown is ranked 7th in the State with an 18:57.00 and Fr. Emily Sreenan of Lima Central Catholic is ranked 8th in the D3 rankings with a 19:00.00. Mt. Gilead Sr. Rachel Bush is ranked 9th in the State with a 19:03.50.
TEAM PREVIEW
Minster is atop the OATCCC poll and is ranked 2nd in the Ohio MileSplit rankings. They should win the Championship. They won the Tiffin Regional scoring a low 38 points. The girls were 5th last year and are led by So. Morgan Pohl. Pohl has run 19:11.39 and is ranked 15th by time in the D3 girls poll. She was 14th last year as a 9th grader (19.17.85). The 1-5 split for the girls is 47.61 seconds. Garaway may be in the #2 position. Led by Jr. Rachel Wentworth, the girls won the Pickerington Regional with just 40 points, running 1, 3, 4, 10 & 22nd. They continue to improve and their place on the podium will be determined by their #5 runner. They are ranked #2 in the OATCCC and 4th in the Ohio MileSplit rankings by time. Number three should be Russia. They won the Troy Region led by #3 Troy finisher Lauren Heaton. The girls scored 48 points and ran: 2, 5, 8, 9 & 24th in the team scoring. The # 4 & 5 teams will be McDonald and Gilmour Academy. McDonald won at Boardman with 75 points to Gilmour's 76. McDonald is ranked 6th in the OATCCC poll and the girls ran 4, 7, 17, 21 & 26th. Their #6 runner was 27th. The Gilmour girls ran 2, 13, 15, 16 & 30th. They were 2nd last year. Liberty Center is the defending team champion and I wouldn't count them out.. They are atop the Ohio Milesplit poll by times and are ranked #4 in the OATCCC poll, but their #4 and 5 runners will have to step up and will determine if they get on the podium or not. Another team who may get on the podium is Berkshire. They were 3rd at Boardman behind McDonald and Gilmour, but have been ranked all season long and in the final OATCCC poll and the Ohio Milesplit poll they are ranked #3.
