Sometimes we just miss congratulating athletes on great accomplishments in their high school careers. As I was putting together a 2014 Year in Review article, I happened to notice the accomplishment of St. Xavier's Michael Hall in the 1600m. He placed 2nd in the 2013 D1 State 1600m and 2nd again in 2014. Michael is at Florida State now, graduating last spring, and I hope that it is not too late to recognize his great runs in NOT WINNING the State 1600m. In 2013, he ran 4:09.45. In 2014, he ran 4:08.52. Excluding Bob Kennedy's 1988 State record run of 4:05.18, going back to 2001, Michael is the only athlete that I am aware of who ran under 4:10 twice and who did not win. 
Hall also led the St. Xavier's boy's XC team to the 2013 D1 State Cross Country Championship, placing 4th in the D1 race with a 15:23.00.
He won the 2014 OATCCC State Indoor 1600m Championship with a 4:15 and in addition to his 2nd in the 1600m was the lead off runner on St. Xavier's record breaking State 4x800 team. The team ran 7:36.33 in setting the D1 record, the Owens Stadium record and the All Time Ohio record. They also went on to win the New Balance Nationals 4x800.
Following are two list or rankings. The first is of the top ten by time for D1 1600 State Meet winners from 2001. I have included Bob Kennedy's 1988 record in the top ten as #1 for perspective. I inserted Michael Hall's two 2nd place times and he is the only runner from 2001-2014 with two under 4:10 runs at the State meet. The second list is a compilation of the All Time 1600's under 4:10 run by Ohioans. Some of the times are converted from the Mile. Congratulations to Michael who certainly has put himself in some elite company with his two 2nd places!
