Augustana surges to sixth in Division III men’s cross country poll

NEW ORLEANS – While the top five is unchanged from the preseason rankings, Augustana (Ill.) surged to sixth in the Division III men’s cross country rankings released today by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Augustana, which was ranked 28th in the preseason poll, is just one of several teams to make big moves in the second poll of the 2007 season. Wisconsin-Platteville improved eight spots to No. 9, Ohio Northern jumped 12 spots to 11th, and Trinity College (Conn.) is ranked 12th after debuting at No. 24.

This week’s top 10 consists of Calvin, New York University, Wisconsin-La Crosse, SUNY Cortland, St. John’s (Minn.), Augustana, North Central, Haverford, Wisconsin-Platteville and Willamette. Calvin received all eight first-place votes.

Calvin won last year’s NCAA Division III men’s championship with 37 points, far in front of runner-up New York University’s 92-point total. This year’s NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships will be held Nov. 17 in Northfield, Minn.

The Division III men’s cross country rankings are determined by a committee comprised of men’s coaches representing the eight different regions of the country. The men and women have different representatives on the ranking committees.

Amherst is ranked No. 1 in the women’s poll.
