Ohio Week Four - Sunshine. 84th Mansfield Mehock Relays - a Preview

The feature event at the 84th Mansfield Mehock Relays is perhaps the boy's 1,600m, where Watkins Sr. Andrew Jordan will run.  He has a State leading 4:16.21 and leads the nation in the 5K at this time with a 14.41.28.  Jordan is also scheduled to run the 800 as well.

After a week of simply miserable T&F weather in Ohio, this weekend brings sushine and mild temperatures.  A perfect T&F weekend.  There are many meets scheduled around the State on Friday and Saturday including the 84th Mansfield Mehock Relays.

"Harry Mehock started the "Mansfield Relays" in 1927. Three teams participated, Mansfield Senior High School, Ashland and Galion. The Relays grew under Harry's direction until 1942 when it was cancelled for four years during World War II, because of gas and personnel shortages. The Relays were re-established in 1947 where its magnitude grew through the 1980's drawing over 3,500 athletes, representing 350 high schools, six states (Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky) and Canada.

When the Mansfield Relays moved to its present location in 1964 and took on the name of its founder, Mehock Relays, it's ten-lane, four- spur, all-weather surface was the first of its kind North of the Mason Dixon line."   It was THE meet in the Spring for many of the Midwest schools who still had cinder tracks and, as we have experienced this year, the weather was not the best and the opportunity to showcase athletes on the new track was a great draw.
