State Meet Day 1 - 4 New State Records! 2 New State Meet Records!

Day 1 of the 2016 OHSAA State Track & Field Meet is in the books.  The weather was hot and just as expected, the St. Thomas Aquinas girl's 4x800m set a new D3 State and State Meet record to start the day off.  The State meet always brings excitement, disappointment and drama as the athletes demonstrate why they are some of the best athletes in the State of Ohio.  There were four new State Records and two new State Meet Records, but the D1 boys and girl's 4x800m races brought the excitement as the St. Ignatius boy's held off a Dublin Coffman team that won last year, winning by just .70 seconds.  7:39.23-7:39.93.

And, on the girl's side, the Gahanna LIncoln girl's took down the Centerville girl's by .18 seconds.  9:03.73-9:03.91.

The disappoinments.  The favorite, Gahanna Lincoln girls DQ'd with a false start in the 4x100m.

  • Starting the day off, the St. Thomas Aquinas girls 4x800m team set a new D3 State and State Meet record of 9:00.84, in running away with the race.  Sr. Athena Welsh led the girls off, So. Hannah Soehnlen ran 2nd, Jr. Kacee Soehnlen was the 3rd leg and Jr. Kalee Soehnlen anchored.  the girls broke their own State record from two years ago and all three sisters will be back next year.

  • Buckeye Trail sophomore Kylie Cutlip set a new D3 and D3 State Meet Record in the 300mH with a 42.04, breaking the record that she set last week in Regionals of 42.37.

  • Jr. Brooke Mangas of Ottovile set a new State  and State Meet record of 5-10 in the High Jump as she defending her title from 2015.

  • MIami Valley Sr. Taylor Middleton broke the D3 State Meet record in the Long Jump with a leap of 18-11.25.  She holds the D3 State record with a jump of 19-01.50 that she jumped in winning the title in 2015.
  • Orange Sr. Jasmine Harris set a new D2 State Meet record in the 100mH running a 13.92.

  • So. Abby Steiner of Dublin Coffman set a new Owens Stadium record in the 100m with a time of 11.60 as she just missed the D1 State  record of 11.59 set in 2000 by Brookhaven's Kalilah Carpenter.  The previous Stadium record was 11.63 set in 2011 by Reynoldsburg's Destinee Gause.

If Day 1 is any indicator of what we will see in Day 2, it should prove to be one of the fastest and most exciting OHSAA State T&F meets of all time.  Watch for Abby Steiner of Dublin Coffman to go for the All-Time Ohio 100 and 200m records, Tyler Johnson of Stivers to try to go sub- 46 in the D2 400, a new All Time State record in the boy's D2 1,600 of under 4:07 or faster and that record just may be broken hours later in the Boys D1 1,600, a new State record in the Boys 3,200, a new State record in the D3 girls 300mH, Cassie Martin going for a forth D1 Girls high Jump title and lots more.
