Division III Boys State Meet Preview - Five Events to Watch

This is the Division III Boys State Meet Preview. Inside you will find five events that will be of interest to the general track and field fan. While this Preview will not be as in depth as the Division I preview, this is in no way a slight to the athletes that have made it to the Division III State meet. Simply it is just a matter of time available to be able to do a preview for both Division II and Division III at the state level.

It's an honor for all athletes to make the state meet, and OHRunners wishes everyone the best.

Ones to Watch

Walt Luttrell owns the fastest time in Ohio this year when he set the Division III state record by running 9:09.15 at the Darby Distance Twilight erlier in the year.  But Walt is doubling, so his recovery will mean that he will most likely have to run to win without trying to move his Division III state record any lower.  The next four fastest times for DIII in the state were set at the Navarre Regional by Filippell, Henning, Migliozzi and Hamilton.  Look for somebody to try to take the race out fast and see if they can lose Luttrell.

Ones to Watch

This race features six athletes within a second and half of each other, and a total of nine athletes within just over two seconds of each other.  This is really anyones call on how the places fall, but Brown and Holland are the two favorites as they went 1-2 at the Navarre Regional.  Look for Holland to try to extract some revenge on Brown.

Ones to Watch

Nickles is the favorite as he is the leader in the state with a vault of 15'10" coming at his conference meet.  Horn, the future decathlete, will be in the running, as he has gone 15'6", if Nickles makes a mistake.  Hopkins went big at the Pickerington Regional, and if he keeps it up he could very well be in the running to place high.  Marshall and Green should battle it out to see who will be on the top half of the podium, this will likely come down to who ever is cleaner.

Ones to Watch

Gaugenti will look to go in the low 47's and take a shot at both the Division III state record and Division III state meet record.  Running at 11:10 AM may give Gaugenti a good shot if it is warm, but not hot at that time.  Look for Gomes to possibly challange Gaugenti for the top spot. Smithey, Leyland and Hallal will battle it out for a close finish for spots three through five, and possibly higher.

Ones to Watch

Gimour Academy and Bluffton will battle this race out all the way to the end, both teams could push each other to break the state record of 3:21.03.  Look for Bluffton to take home the gold with speedster John Gaugenti anchoring the team.  McDonald and Liberty-Benton have gone 3:24 this year and could possible be in the mix in the final lap.
