Event by Event Highlights & Results

- Boys High Jump: With a handful of athletes in the field capable of clearing the seven foot barrier, the high jump turned into one of the most anticipated field events of the weekend. Great weather and a hard jumping surface made for some great attempts. In the end Dwight Barbiasz (Milford, NH) beat the field, leaping to victory of 7-01, becoming the only athlete of the day to clear the seven foot mark.

Two others, Paul Annear (Richland Center, WI) and Tyler Campbell (Jasper, AL) kept Barbiasz on his toes by clearing every height up to 6-11 with him. However, Annear and Campbell could only clear 6-11, missing on all three attempts at 7-01.

- Girls Hammer Throw: Imagine competing a bit sub-par for how you wanted to compete, pack up your bags from that meet and travel to a few states over to compete again the next day. Not only would it be hard to stay focused with the travel, but you'd also have to bounce back and work on your mental game. Well, Allison Horner (Marietta, GA) did just that and it worked out perfectly Saturday, winning the hammer throw with a great mark of 177-02.

Horner touched upon her Junior Nationals showing yesterday saying, "I didn't throw as well as I wanted to yesterday, so I really motivated myself today to do my best."

The LSU-bound Horner easily won the event with a series of throws that trumped everyone else's in the field, including her final three throws over 52.50 meters. Earning the runner-up spot was Victoria Flowers (Classical, RI), who placed a strong second with a toss of 167-10.

- Girls Steeplechase: A classic battle between two of the best prep female sprinters ever took place Saturday around noon. Shelby Greany (Suffern, NY) and Emma Coburn (Crusted Butte, CO) took the pace out at a very hard pace, pushing the field and stringing it out early. At the mile mark it was clear one of these athletes was going to take home the title, it was all a matter of who was stronger over the final water barrier. Greany, who has shown she is the best in the land all season, kicked home strong and won the race in a new U.S. #1 time of 6:42.86. Coburn finished off by just a couple second in a U.S. #2 mark of 6:44.42.

- Boys Steeplechase: After the half-way point of the boys steeplechase Saturday it wasn't a matter of if Zachary Ornelas (Cedar Park, TX) would win the event, but rather how much he would win by. Ornelas broke the field after two and a half laps, extending his lead lap after lap, all the way to the finish of the 2,000m event. Ornelas won the event by three seconds, but he was in control as he crossed the line in 5:54.58.

Oregon's Taylor Morgan (Central Catholic, OR) closed extremely well, crushing the final 250 meters to finish second in 5:57.47. Donny Roys (Medina, OH) finished third in just over six minutes with a time of 6:00.89

https://www.milesplit.com/files/usa/non08/thewoodlands(bm).jpg- Boys 4x1mile Relay: The race was close through three legs, but when The Woodlands' (TX) Drew Butler made his kick to hand-off to his anchor leg Reed Connor (pictured right by Brandon Miles), The Woodlands grabbed a very nice lead and never looked back. The Woodlands ruled the show, crossing the line in victory with a great time of 17:26.58.

Early on the race was very competitive, with Fishers (IN) grabbing the lead for the first two legs. On the third leg Fishers, The Woodlands and Pinckney (MI) looked great, but Butler's big kick with 400m to go really gapped the pack and eventually meant victory for the Texas distance powerhouse.

- Girls 4x1mile Relay: Similar to the boys race, this race was close until the third leg, when Burnt-Hills (NY) opened up a big lead, closing strong on their final two legs to win the event with the number three all-time mark in the event, 20:09.87. Sam Roecker was the strongest leg for B-H, running a 4:55 third leg to extend the squads lead way out. On the anchor leg Meaghan Gregory ran 5:00.6 to help the team cross the finish line first.
