Mount Union Open Meet - Recap

Maddie Dunlap took control early in the Girls 1600m race.

MileSplit Ohio was on site in Alliance to observe the action at the recent Mount Union Open Meet. There were numerous elite performances demonstrated in the Girls Weight Throw competition as 7 athletes recorded throws of 40-0 or farther.  Carrol Pauley of Riverdale led the way with her 54-5.5 winning throw.

In the Pole-Vault competition, Allie Stern of Walsh Jesuit and Green's Kaitlyn Hawkins finished 1-2 respectively with their 12-0 vaults.  Hawkins' 2nd place result is an Ohio #8 this season, while Stern is tied for 2nd on the state rankings list with her 12-5 effort at the National Pole Vault Summit in Nevada last month.

In the sprints, Ke'Aijhan Strong from Tuslaw High School captured victories in both the 60m and 200m races.  Her winning times were 7.82 and 26.27 and her 60m time is a tie for an Ohio #10. Carrollton High School's Maddie Dunlap put a 7 second gap on 2nd place and took home the win with a strong 5:21.96 showing in the Girls 1600m race.  Her performance is an Ohio #27 (with consideration given to the 1 mile conversion).

Maddie Dunlap's 1600m effort represents a top 30 spot in the state rankings.

In boys action, Hoover's Matt Peare showed his athletic diversity by winning both a track and a field event. Peare, who is well known for his national caliber ability in the Pole-Vault, won the Pole-Vault competition with a 16-2 clearance.  On the track, he took the 60m Hurdles win with a time of 8.16 and he also ran a slightly faster 8.14 in the 60m Hurdles prelims.  Peare's prelims result secured him an Ohio #3 in that event for this season.

The Boys 1600m race saw Louisville's Nick Chaplik work with the pack for much of the race until he picked his spot to make a late charge in capturing a 6 second victory.  Chaplik's 1st place finish was recorded in 4:25.74 and this is an Ohio #11 time (with consideration given to the 1 mile conversion).

Nick Chaplik finished strong to take the Boys 1600m win.

A.J. Dietrich of Madison High School also made a late move to win the Boys 800m.  Dietrich waited until the bell lap to surge on his competition on route to his 2:03.85 finish.  Dietrich indicated post-race that he gained valuable experience from this tactical competition and he feels that his come from behind win will help to refine his 800m performances in the future and it will also pay dividends in the upcoming MileSplit Scholastic Showcase at Spire meet.  Dietrich is a confirmed entry in the 800m field for the prestigious Showcase at Spire.

A.J. Dietrich took control of the Boys 800m race during the last lap.
