Hunter Moore of Olentangy Orange High School won the 3200m race at the recent Stingel Invitational in Pickerington, Ohio with an outstanding time of 8:59.78. In breaking the elusive 9 minute barrier, Moore established a new P.R. for the 3200m distance and he set the #1 mark for Ohio during the outdoor season. MileSplit Ohio had an opportunity to connect with Hunter Moore following his run to talk about what this achievement means to him and to learn about how his race unfolded.
From Hunter Moore:
With a fresh Andy Payne, Kevin Hennessey and Daniel White, I knew coming in that this was going to be a fun race. I had a little trouble getting out, as I got boxed in from the gun. However, before the 100m mark I was able to maneuver around and take the lead. I came through in 66 for the first 400m and I felt smooth and relaxed. I ended up going through 1600m in around 4:31 and I was feeling very comfortable. With 800m to go I was at 6:49 and I really wasn't sure if I'd be able to go under 9 minutes or not, but I didn't give up and I picked up the pace. With a lap to go, I came through in 7:55 and I knew I could run faster than a 65 for the last lap so I just went as hard as I could and I heard my coach cheering me on with 300m to go. Arjun Jha was yelling 8:27 with 200m to go and the crowd was screaming down the homestretch so it was an exciting experience for me. More than anything, this race was a big confidence booster as it showed me that I can run fast at the beginning of the season and hopefully this will lead to me dropping more time in two weeks at the Eastern Relays where I'll be facing great competition.

For Hunter's race, it was a nice day as the weather was in the upper 50's and it was sunny and without much wind. His first lap was a 66 and he came through the mile in 4:31 and then he closed with a 4:28 2nd mile. Hunter went sub 64 over his last lap to break the 9 minute barrier. He's been working very hard in training and he's looking to go even faster against a talented field at the Eastern Relays in Louisville, Kentucky in a few weeks time.
