Foster's 1600 Highlights Boys Events at Wild SPIRE Showcase

The Big Storylines

Nick Foster Runs US No. 1 4:07 1600 Meters, Mauri US No. 2

Though most of those records were set last season, it is hard to believe that anyone thought a Dustin Horter record would get broken so quickly.

On Sunday, on the prestigious SPIRE Institute Indoor Track, Ann Arbor Pioneer's Nick Foster did just that, running 4:07.16 and wiping off Horter's 4:07.52 facility record.

It was a negative split for the University of Michigan commit, as he cruised through the first lap in 2:05. But with Howland's Vincent Mauri right on his hip, Foster had to turn on the jets to secure the victory and the US Number 1 time. His 2:02 final lap was good enough to hold off the Ohio phenom and grab the new facility record.

Foster and Mauri now hold down the top two spots in the country in the 1600 Meter Run, but they also helped four more boys crack into the top 20 as well. Grove City Area (PA)'s Jonah Powell ran a US No. 7 4:15.97 and a PA No. 1 time. Hudson's Evan Manley and Hilliard Davidson's Max LeClair are now US No. 10 and No. 11 after putting down 4:16.42 and 4:16.80 season bests. And finally, Olentangy Orange's Andrew Schroff ran a US No. 18 4:18.68. The 1600 meter run brought the firepower on Sunday, led by Foster and Mauri, but also running six deep with plenty of US marks abound.

Shoaf Chucks US No. 6, OH No. 1 69-8 Weight Throw

It may not have been a facility record, but the US No. 6, OH No. 1 Weight Throw from Rocky River's Michael Shoaf was easily one of the biggest performances of the weekend.

The 69-8 heave puts Shoaf in great position to make some noise this winter. He still has plenty of time to become the first Ohioan to clear 70-0 this season, even though the competition is heavy behind him, but may just be the candidate to do it. On Sunday, his 69-8 may have been his best toss, but he also threw 68-10 and 69-5, both top 11 marks in the country and top 3 in Ohio.

Shoaf had it all working on Sunday as he finished three feet of the next closest competitor. Amherst Steele's Jaret Prete heaved an OH No. 5 66-2 for second and Eastwood's Erik Fertig placed third in 64-5

Caleb Brown Throws Down US No. 3 3200 With Eye-Popping 9:07

If you picked Shelby junior Caleb Brown to run a 15-second personal best and US No. 3 3200 9:07.56 on Sunday, then please stop by the press box to collect your high five.

In one of the fastest 3200s top to bottom that we have seen in the country so far this season, it was a lights out effort from Brown that stole the show. He was able to stave off some of the top names in the state, country, and even in Canada, to bring home the victory. It was a 15-second personal best, as we mentioned, but it continues a breakout campaign for Brown that has seen him drop a total of 22 seconds off of his lifetime best 3200 and another 4 seconds off his 1600 lifetime best.

Stratford Central (ON)'s Joshua Zelek placed second with his 9:09.43, but coming in just behind him was University High (WV) freshman Larry Josh Edwards, who ran the fastest 3200 among freshmen in our entire MileSplit database, going US No. 6 9:12.28. Edwards burst on the scene this fall and is already showing that he could be the next big thing in distance running in the entire country. Hudson's Adam Beucler, the top returner from 2018, finished fourth with a season-best 9:15.09 and Ayersville junior Noah Fisher rounded out a crop of five boys under 9:20 with a 13-second indoor personal best of 9:18.99.

Dylan Brown Brings The Noise in 60m and 200m Dashes

Coming into the meet as the fifth fastest seed in the 60m dash and seventeenth fastest seed in the 200m dash, Track Life University/Detroit King junior Dylan Brown pulled off two major upsets in the short sprint events. He secured victories in the 60m dash in a US No. 8 6.82 and 200m dash in a US No. 12 21.61.

The Michigander had a huge breakthrough this Sunday as he dropped his first career sub-6.9 and sub-22 (indoor) and could use this weekend to propel himself into the national limelight. He ran away from Pickerington Central's Lorenzo Styles, Jr. and Motor City Track Club's James Flournoy in the 60 and then came back later to hold off Ohio studs Christian Ford (Lima Shawnee) and LaCarr Trent (Gahanna Lincoln), who ran 21.81 and 21.88, respectively, OH No. 1 and No. 2 times.
