Taylor Ewert is the type of athlete who calculates things

And make no mistake, the Beavercreek (OH) High School junior's effort in the Olympic Development women's 5K racewalk at The Penn Relays on Saturday was no surprise.

She set another American Junior Record in 22:28.61, which currently sits at No. 2 in the world and No. 1 for U20 athletes.

The larger goal, however, is nearly a year away. And for Ewert, who also owns American Junior Records in the 3K and 10K racewalk, her work is only beginning, as it will take a herculean effort to even approach the new Olympic 'A' standard of 1:31.00 in the women's 20K racewalk.

Before the weekend, Ewert's best at 10K -- which she posted back in July at the IAAF U20 Championships, finishing 10th overall -- was essentially half of that standard. And to qualify for the racewalk at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, she'll need to pursue hitting that standard first.

That's why this recent effort is so important. The time is 10 seconds faster than her previous win at The Penn Relays in 2018. If you factor her stellar cross country season to go along with ever-improving speed and consistent form, Ewert should make a run at the racewalk in 2020.

This weekend was another indication of just how talented the junior athlete is on a world scale.
