2009 Fall Sports Preview: Blue Streaks Seeking Better Fortunes For 2009 Men's Soccer Season

Disappointment is a hard word to deal with in the world of sports, and nothing erases that word quicker than success. That will serve as motivation for the John Carroll men's soccer team, which is seeking better fortunes in 2009 after a tough ending to 2008.

2008 was an enigma for the John Carroll men's soccer team. With nine starters back and coming off an NCAA Championship appearance, the stars look aligned for another memorable season.

Despite some impressive early results, including a win over NCAC champion Ohio Wesleyan, the memorable season never materialized and ended with a home loss in the OAC Tournament semifinals.

The Blue Streaks lost their top two scorers from last year through graduation, but nearly everyone else returns for fourth-year head coach Hector Marinaro

“We are very excited about the 2009-2010 season,” said Marinaro. “We feel with the majority of our roster returning along with another deep recruiting class that we will be able to have another very solid campaign."

With 15 freshman coming into camp to join the mix, expectations could again run high for John Carroll soccer. Senior Jeff Kosek (the active team leader with 10 career goals) and sophomore Corey Rider will lead the offense, while a healthy Kyle Buxman returns with fellow junior Joe Ciacchi to patrol the midfield.
The entire set of backs returns, led by all-conference performer Jake Milli, David Hickey (also an NCAA qualifier in the hurdles), Steve Rock, and Ryan Ricart.

Senior all-league goalkeeper Matt DeMarchi is also back in the fold.

Veterans Matt Collins, Sam Stoll, Brendan McCreary, Michael Zumerling, Andrew Fatigati, Phil Hewitt and Joshuah Tatro give the Blue Streaks depth across the board.

"We made fitness an even greater focus in the offseason," said Marinaro. "Our early season schedule will test that commitment, and should have us ready for the conference schedule."
