Two penalties proved too severe for the John Carroll women's soccer team, as a pair of penalty kicks would be the Blue Streaks' downfall in a season-opening 2-1 overtime loss to Hiram College Tuesday evening at Don Shula Stadium.

Box Score

John Carroll began the scoring with a goal by Mari O'Neill off a Caitlyn Walton corner kick at the 20:35 mark of the first half. The 1-0 lead would hold up for the remainder of the first half and the first 25 minutes of the second half.

Hiram would seize upon an opportunity at the 71:14 mark of the second when Claire Conner, after being fouled inside the box, scored on a penalty kick to tie the score at 1-1.

The two teams finished regulation tied, and at the outset of overtime, Hiram pushed the pace. The Terriers would then get the biggest break of the night when JCU goalkeeper Mackenzie Kenner was whistled for a foul in the box, setting up Conner for her second attempt at a penalty kick. Conner cashed in at the 95:13 mark to give the Terriers a 2-1 victory.

JCU outshot Hiram 13-10 and bested the Terriers in corner kicks 3-1. The loss is only JCU's second in it's last 10 home games dating back to last season.
