9/13/2009 12:00:00 AM

Bowling Green, OH - Behind a strong performance from junior Elisha Kipchumba (Nairobi, Kenya), the University of Toledo men's cross country team placed second at the Mel Brodt Invitational, held Saturday at Bowling Green. The Rockets finished with 57 points, only behind Dayton, which tallied 23 points. Marshall came in third with 67 points and Bowling Green fourth with 91 points.

Kipchumba placed fourth overall in the 8K race with a time of 24:55. He won last week's 5K dual meet race against Bowling Green. Junior captain Chris Wall (Centerville, OH) placed seventh in 25:19 and sophomore Jonathan DeWitt (Akron, OH) followed in 10th place with a time of 25:35.

Other top performers for the men included senior Ken Samoei (Kapsabet, Kenya), who ran in 26:09, which was good for 17th place, as well as junior David Herrett (Westerville, OH), who took 19th with a time of 26:17. Overall, 45 runners competed in the meet.

“We ran very well today,” said head coach Kevin Hadsell. “It was a great 8K opener for the team. We are starting to establish ourselves as a very good MAC team.”

The men are off for several weeks and will return to action at the Lakefront Invitational at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 3 in Chicago.
