Cross Country Treks to Virginia for Colonial Challenge

9/23/2009 7:45:00 PM

Toledo, OH - Following a 22-day layoff, the University of Toledo women's cross country team will return to action Saturday at the Colonial Inter-Regional Challenge, hosted by William & Mary College in Williamsburg, VA.

The Rockets have plenty of reasons for excitement coming off of the extended break. UT finds itself sitting 12th in the first Great Lakes Region poll after an excellent start to the season. The Rockets recorded a perfect score in their dual meet against rival Bowling Green on Sept. 4, using a lineup that consisted solely of freshmen and sophomores.

The upperclassmen will make their debut this weekend, including senior Renata Volf (Krizevci, Croatia), a 2007 All-MAC and All-Region performer, as well as senior Dagna Szytkiel (Bytom, Poland), an NCAA Regional qualifier in the spring in the steeplechase. That duo will help lead the way in the 6K event against a field that includes the host Colonials, Navy, Hampton, Longwood and Christopher Newport.

Also in action will be sophomore Ari Fisher (Lebanon, OH), who won the BG dual in a time of 14:01, along with classmates Lindsay Toussant (Minerva, OH) and Emma Kertesz (Toledo, OH), who both placed in the top-five.

"We have been training incredibly well," said head coach Kevin Hadsell. "I believe we are on track for a huge season. William & Mary is a potential NCAA qualifying team, and I think we can be very competitive with them."
