The The Greater Cleveland Conference Championship was held at Strongsville High School on Saturday. Teams looked to run fast and gain confidence heading into Districts, which are slated for this coming weekend.
On the boy's side, Mentor proved to be a team to watch for putting their top five runners in the top 12 overall, showcasing an unheard of two-second split between their top five. This performance was strong enough to win the team title with 42 points. Second-place Solon had a strong showing with fourth and fifth place finishes for Jonny Ciccero and Nathan Close, respectively. Winning the individual title was junior Evan Jarold out of Brunswick, with a time of 16:13.32. After finishing, he turned around in disbelief to see teammate Alex Keller finish second overall, completing a Brunswick 1-2 punch. Keller clocked a career best mark of16:18.11.
In the girl's race, Julia Isham of Strongsville battled Savannah Dennison of Mentor for the individual title, with Isham pulling away in the final mile finishing in 18:23.52. Mentor put together another strong team race with Dennison leading the way with a second-place finish, followed by Annie Berrow and Kate Szep in third and fourth place, respectively. The Cardinals took the team title in dominant fashion with 28 points. Medina finished second in the team race with 68 points.
