BOWLING GREEN – The Bowling Green State University men's cross country teams will host its final meet before the Mid-American Conference Championships Saturday when the Falcons host 21 teams for the Falcon Invite.

The men's race will start at 11:30 a.m. and will feature teams from NCAA Division I as well as teams from the NAIA and NJCAA.

The Falcons have repeatedly given solid team efforts and improved as the season has progressed and head coach Cami Wells expects more of the same in preparation for the upcoming MAC Championships.

“I expect that we will give a strong team effort across the board,” Wells said. “The focus all season has been on each man being accountable and doing his job to have the best team we can have on meet days.”

The team is expecting a strong finish in the meet that features four other MAC schools, Akron, Buffalo, Eastern Michigan and Kent State.

Kent State is ranked as the 10th best team in the Great Lakes Region of Division I by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Eastern Michigan is ranked 12th. Malone University also figures to provide tough competition for the Falcons, as the Pioneers come into the invite as the best team in the NAIA. Malone finished second overall in the All-Ohio Championships two weeks ago.

“We want to improve upon our finish in this meet from last year, build on the success we had at All-Ohio and compete well against the other MAC schools, as well as the other schools in the meet,” Wells said.

The Falcons have consistently relied on three runners, junior Chris Moody, freshman Jason Salyer and junior Jesse Smuda.

The threesome has finished 1-2-3 within the team standings in each race this season.

In order for the men to keep improving, the others runners will have to keep improving as well.

“The men know that each person has to step up and get it done this weekend,” Wells said.

Juniors John Bernard, Abraham Busienei, Jeff Ehler, Johnston Kirui, Erik Kuehner, Moody and Smuda will be joined by sophomores Ben Leininger, Peter Miles and freshman Jason Salyer in the competition.

“I am very pleased to have such a large field of teams attending the meet and expect that it will be a great competition so I just want to encourage anyone who can to come out to see the meet on Saturday,” Wells said.
