Women Looking for Strong Finish as they Host the Falcon Invite

Fri, Oct, 16 | Women's Cross Country

BOWLING GREEN – The Bowling Green State University women's cross country team will host its final meet before the MAC Championships Saturday when the Falcons welcome 22 teams to Forrest Creason Golf Course for the Falcon Invite.

The team is looking for a strong finish in the event, which is set to get underway at 10:45 a.m.

“We do have a team goal to win the Falcon Invite with the women's team this weekend,” head coach Cami Wells said. “We finished runner up in our last home meet and really want to finish up our final home competition with a team title.”

It will not come easily as Kent State, Ashland and Malone will provide significant challenges for BGSU.

Kent State is rated as the tenth best team in the Great Lakes region of Division I by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Ashland is rated as the sixth best team in the Midwest Region of Division II and Malone is ranked fifth in the NAIA. Two other MAC schools, Buffalo and Eastern Michigan are in the meet as well. Cleveland State, Detroit Mercy, Oakland, Robert Morris, Wright State and Youngstown State are the other Division I teams in the race.

With a week off as well as having fall break, the team is gearing up to finish the season on a positive note.

“The fall break was certainly a positive for us as it gave everyone a little break from the stresses of class for a couple days and allowed the teams to get some extra rest and to come back ready to compete,” Wells said.

“The teams have been enthusiastic all season about competing but certainly home meets are always something we look forward to and the conference meet is the meet we gear our season toward every year.  We always look to have our best team performance at MAC and it is always an exciting time of year for us.”

In each of the Falcons four races this season, a different runner has stepped up to lead the team. Ashley Fischer, Abby Koch, Andrea Pereira de Almeida and Carly Wells have each been the top finisher for Bowling Green.

With solid pack running and several candidates to win the race, the Falcons should be in good shape on Saturday.

“I expect the women's team to give their best team effort this year,” Wells said. “This is our home meet, we have a completely healthy team and they have trained all year to get to this time of the season so I expect they will go out and put forth a gutsy team effort on Saturday and do everything within their power to win the team title.”

Seniors Pereira de Almeida, Carly Wells, juniors Heather Conger, Autumn Dettmann, Ashley Fischer, Sally Kandie, Megan Kelsey, Courtney Krummert, Barbara Powers and freshmen Abby Koch and Taylor Stichter will all race for BGSU. Freshman Katie Borgelt will race as an unattached runner.

The Falcons welcome fans to come out to Forrest Creason Golf Course and join in on the excitement.

“I am very pleased to have such a large field of teams attending the meet and expect that it will be a great competition so I just want to encourage anyone who can to come out to see the meet on Saturday,” Wells said.
