The Falcons narrowly edged Mid-American rival Kent State, who finished with 61 points. Malone was third with 78.

“I am extremely proud of them,” head coach Cami Wells said of her team. “We have a really close group and they have been working really well together.”

“It's nice to see when somebody has an off day that somebody else will step up.”

The runner that really stepped up was junior Heather Conger, who put forth a great effort as she finished third in the event with a time of 22:15.1. Her personal record time places her 14th all-time in BGSU history in the 6K race.

“Certainly for Heather Conger this was a huge race, she came into the season really strong and then had some illness issues that got her down for awhile and now she's come back up,” Wells said. “This was a big breakthrough for her and it certainly came at the right time.”

Carly Wells, a senior who has been one of the more consistent Falcons runners, was seventh ending the race in 22:31.3.

Another runner who stepped up in the cold temperatures was junior Sally Kandie, who also set a new personal record.

Kandie, who finished 12th, ran a time of 22:44.4 to finish in the team's top three for the first time.

“I'm not sure why she likes the cold so much coming from Kenya, but she does and she ran a really strong race today,” Wells said.

Junior Barbara Powers had her best performance of the season after struggling with an earlier hamstring injury. She finished 18th in 22:51.2.

“It was a great race for her today,” Wells said of Power's performance. “It's hard for Barbara to be happy with what she does, but I think she was actually happy today, so that says a lot from her.”

Freshman Abby Koch and senior Andrea Pereira de Almeida finished back-to-back at 18th and 19th for the Falcons. Koch, who set a new personal record, crossed the finish line in 22:51.2 and Pereira de Almeida ended in 22:55.1

Autumn Dettmann was the final Falcon runner to place as the junior came in 43rd with a time of 23:35.4.

Junior Megan Kelsey (23:51.2), junior Ashley Fischer (24:08.1), freshman Taylor Stichter (24:26.3, personal record) and junior Courtney Krummert (25:02.5) also raced for the Falcons.

It was a great way to end the regular season for seniors Carly Wells and Pereira de Almeida.

“I'm really pleased for them, because it was a goal for our seniors Andrea and Carly to finish off their final meet here,” Wells said. “We're really happy the team could do that for them and they could do it for themselves.”

Wells was also happy with the fact that the team competed well with Kent State and Malone, two teams that had finished ahead of the Falcons earlier in the season.

“We had the goal to win this one and we knew it was going to be tough,” Wells said. “It was certainly a very good effort, but we can't back down at all now. With the MAC meet, we have to bring everything there.”

Wells expects a great effort out of the team next week, especially since the Falcons now know what they are capable of.

“They can see now that their hard work is paying off,” Wells said. “We have been racing well all year, but not to our full potential.”

“I think this race really showed what we are capable of as a team and we know we have more. So we are just going to have to do everything we can to say healthy and then go into that meet and fight the whole way, because it is not going to get any easier.”

The Falcons will run for a chance at a MAC title on October 31 in Athens, Ohio at noon.
