Falcons Hope For Solid Finish on Saturday

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green women's cross country team will meet the climax of its season on Saturday when the Falcons race in the Mid-American Conference Championship. The Orange and Brown will compete against the other 11 MAC schools in the event, which will be held on the campus of Ohio University. The women's 6K race is set to get underway at noon.

Sizing up the Competition
The MAC has proven once again to be one of the top conferences in the Great Lakes region as four teams from the conference are ranked inside the Top 15 of the region by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Toledo leads the way ranked 6th. Miami (10th), Akron (11th) and Central Michigan (15th) are also in the poll. In the preseason poll, Miami was picked to win the event. Bowling Green was predicted to finish 8th.

Consistent Carly
Carly Wells has been the most consistent runner for the Falcons in 2009. The senior from Palentine, Illinois has been one of the top three Falcons in all five races this fall. Wells was the top runner for the Orange and Brown when she finished in 29th place at the All-Ohio Championship with a time of 19:37.5 in the 5K event. She has been he second Falcon runner to cross the finish line in three races and the was third in another.

Climbing the Ladder
In the Falcons impressive victory at the Falcon Invite, several runners put their names in the BGSU history books.  Heather Conger, who finished third, now owns the 14th best 6K time in BGSU cross country history with her time of 22:15.1. Carly Wells' time of 22:31.3 placed her 22nd all-time. Wells already had the 16th best time. Sally Kandie's time of 22:44.4 was 28th in team history and Barbara Power's finish of 21:51.2 ranked her 32nd.

Fabulous Freshman
Abby Koch of Stow, Ohio has performed well in her rookie season with the Falcons. She has been one of the first five finishers in every race for BGSU. Her best performance came in the Mel Brodt Invitational when she ended up 8th with a time of 18:45.5. She has finished third in a race and fourth in two others for the Orange and Brown.

Heather Heating Up
Heather Conger did not have the start to the season that Head Coach Cami Wells expected. But after battling some sickness, Conger had a banner race in the Falcon Invite. The junior ran a personal-best time of 22:15.1 in a 6K as she finished third and led the Falcons to a team victory.

Back to Full Strength
After a month of nagging injuries, Barbara Powers broke out and had her best race of the season in the Falcon Invite. She finished 15th in the event, in which she crossed the finish line in 22:47.2.

Veteran Squad
Of the nine women expected to run for the Falcons, eight will be upper classman. The group will be led by seniors Carly Wells and Andrea Pereira de Almeida. Heather Conger, Sally Kandie, Barabara Powers, Autumn Dettmann, Ashley Fischer and Megan Kelsey will make up the junior contingent. Freshman Abby Koch is the only underclassman expected to race for the Falcons.

MACnificent Falcons
In the program's history, 34 runners have combined to achieve All-MAC honors 61 times. The latest BGSU runner to achieve the honor was Barbara Powers last season, when she finished 7th at the MAC Championship. Under Head Coach Cami Wells five women runners have earned the All-MAC accolades.

1998
The last time the Falcons won the MAC title was in 1998. Suzanne Isco was the last individual to claim a title for the Falcons in 1995. Three other BGSU runners have achieved the feat. Tracey Losi (1994), JoAnn Laneiaux (1982, 1981) and Betsy Ryan (1980) also won individual titles. Hanane Sabri was the last Falcon to finish runner-up, when she did so in 1999.
