KALAMAZOO, MI -
Rocket athletes scored wins in six events, but the University of Toledo track
team dropped a narrow decision in a dual meet with Western Michigan, falling
71.5-67.5 Sunday evening.
Junior Amanda Kaverman (Sylvania, OH) helped pace the Rockets with victories in both the 55
and 200 meter dash. Classmate Alex Afloari (Deva, Romania) edged out WMU's
Ashley Hunault in the 55 meter hurdles, crossing the finish line just one
one-hundredth of a second in front of her with a time of 8.20.
Afloari's productive
day continued with a win in the triple jump (39-00.25) and a runner-up showing
in the long jump (18-02.25). She has won the triple jump in each of the three
meets this season.
Lindsay Toussant
(Minerva, OH) earned a victory in the 3000 meter run, as she outdistanced
Samantha Tomerlin in a time of 10:22.93. Senior Michelle Sutherland (Maumee, OH)
picked up a win in the high jump (5-06.00), with freshman Huijun Jing (Beijing,
China) coming in second.
Freshman Sarah Woodrum (Marion, OH) took second in the 400 in a time of 59.45. Junior Karen Sovacool (Lakewood, OH) was second in the one mile run with her mark of 5:04.28,
while sophomore Jaime Gittens (Wallaceburg, Ontario) took second in the triple
jump behind Afloari.
"It was the closest dual we have ever had with Western," Kevin Hadsell, head coach, said. "They are
traditionally a top-three team in the MAC. I am very encouraged after today as the
the strength of our team. We didn't run most of our top distance
runners in their normal events so this was a winnable meet for us."
The Rockets return
to competition at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16 at the Bowling Green Team
Challenge.
