BGSU Kicks Off 2010 Season This Saturday

Track And Field Ready For 2010 Season

Mon, Jan, 11 | Women's Track and Field

The Bowling Green State University track and field team opens its 2010 season this Saturday.  The season, which stretches to late Spring, begins with four home meets in the first five weeks.

The BGSU Challenge takes place this Saturday.  The following Friday, the Falcons host the Jane Hermann Invitational.  Eight days later, the Orange and Brown will hold the Tom Wright Classic.  After a road meet during the first week of February, the Falcons return home to host the All-Ohio Championship on February 12th and 13th.

Following that meet, Bowling Green takes to the road for the rest of the season, traveling to such locales as South Bend, IN, Kalamazoo, MI and Des Moines, IA.  The season concludes with the MAC Championships in Buffalo, NY from May 13th to 15th.  The NCAA Midwest Regional is two weeks after the MAC Championships, followed by the NCAA Championships one week later.

The Falcons are led into the 2010 season by four seniors.  Sabrina Forstein specializes in the pole vault.  Last year, she had a season-best vault of 3.70 meters in the MAC Championships.  Forstein also won the event at the Tom Wright Classic and CMU Quadrangular.  She also won the Toledo Collegiate Challenge during the outdoor season.  Hillary Hewit is a mid-distance runner who placed second at last year's Jane Hermann Invitational with a season best time of 1:02.76 in the 800 meters.

Danielle Thornton is also a mid-distance runner; she posted a team-best time of 1:00.80 in the 400m at the MAC Championships.  She also recorded a team-best time in the 500m at the Jane Hermann Invite.  Thornton finished second in that race.  The final senior on the roster is Andrea Pereira de Almeda; she is a distance runner for the Falcons.  In the 2009 season, she competed in events such as the 10,000m, 5000m, 3000m and one mile run.  She placed fourth in the mile run at the Tom Wright Classic with a time of 5:16.70 and had a personal best time of 5:11.97 at the All-Ohio Championships.

This year's squad features 12 juniors.  Heather Conger, Autumn Dettmann, Courtney Krummert, Shannon Laseak and Carly Wells specialize in mid-distance events.  Megan Kelsey, Barbara Powers and Tara Weiss compete in the distance events.  Sarah Hooten and Brittani McNeal handle the sprint events.  Rachael Doughty runs the hurdles, and Paige Lane competes in the javelin throw.

The junior class features several victories during the 2009 season.  Conger won the 800m race twice (Tom Wright Classic, Jane Hermann Invitational), while McNeal and Doughty each won the long jump event.  McNeal's 5.71m was best at the Jane Hermann Invite, while Doughty's 5.02m was tops at the Tom Wright Classic.

The Falcons' six sophomores are primarily runners.  Gillian Allan, Saisha Gaillard and Meghan Niehaus compete in the mid-distance runs, while Ashley Fischer and Sally Jerop run in the distance events.  Competing in the throwing events is Ashley Harris

Rounding out this year's Orange and Brown track and field team are 16 incoming freshmen.  This group includes athletes competing across the entire spectrum of events, but the class is loaded with sprinters for the Falcons' future.  Eight of this year's 16 freshmen specialize in sprints, with four of those eight also set to compete in jumps.
