Keesler provisionally qualifies for NCAA Championship at Marietta Open #2

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College track and field team continued its indoor season when the Pioneer women placed second and the men took fifth at the Marietta Open #2 Saturday (Jan. 23) afternoon inside the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center. [Results]

Cedarville swept the six-school event with 151 points in the women's competition and 203 points in the men's competition. Marietta's women compiled 128 points to hold off third-place West Virginia Wesleyan, who finished with 120 points. Marietta's men collected 69 points in the day.

Marietta Sophomore Kim Keesler (Chagrin Falls, Chagrin Falls) once again had the standout performance of the meet. Keesler, the reigning Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Field Athlete of the Week, improved upon her own school record in the Pole Vault and became the first Pioneer to reach a NCAA Division III provisional qualifying mark. Keesler successfully cleared 3.57m (11-08.50) en route to winning the Pole Vault for a second straight week.

A trio of other pole vaulters helped Marietta rack up 21 total points in the event. Junior Olivia Holiday (Malta, Morgan) took third with a mark of 3.05m (10-00.00), freshman Chyrsten Regelski (Greenville, Arcanum Butler) placed fourth with a mark of 2.90m (9-06.25) and freshman Kaci Cunningham (Salesville, Buckeye Trail) was sixth with a mark of 2.59m (8-06.00). Holiday and Regelski joined Keesler in meeting the A Qualifying Standard for the upcoming OAC Indoor Championship, which will be hosted by Marietta Feb. 26-27.

Sophomore Ashley Bault (Atwater, Waterloo) won a pair of field events on Saturday. She began the day with a first place finish in the Long Jump by leaping 5.04m (16-06.50) and the won the High Jump by clearing 1.50m (4-11.00). Bault's effort in the Long Jump met the OAC Championship's A Qualifying Standard.

Pioneer sophomore Corryn Muench (Cold Spring, Ky., Newport Central Catholic) won the 500m Run with a time of 1:24.00. Classmate Danielle Staub (Boxford, Mass., Masconomet Regional) finished second with a time of 1:26.00. Both met the B Qualifying Standard for the OAC Indoor Championship.

Sophomore Jennifer Emmert (Martinsburg, W.Va., Martinsburg) gave the Marietta women their fifth individual champion as she ran to victory in the 3,000m Run. Emmert crossed the line in 11:18.22.

The duo of junior Stephanie Hammond (Toledo, Central Catholic) and freshman Jacci Weaver (North Lima, South Range) combined for 24 points in the Shot Put and Weight Throw events on Saturday. Hammond took third in the Weight Throw with a personal record toss of 10.46m (34-04.00) and then placed second in the Shot Put with a season's best mark of 14.13m (46-04.25). Weaver, meanwhile, placed third in the Weight Throw with a season's best throw of 12.71m (41-08.50) and fourth in the Shot Put with a mark of 10.40m (34-01.50).

Marietta's 4x200m Relay, which featured sophomore Lauren Asbury (White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., Greenbrier East), senior Christi Tims (Olmsted Township, Olmsted Falls), Muench and freshman Kristeva Rowe (Toledo, Sylvania Southview), also earned 10 points with a victory. The Pioneers crossed the line in season's best time of 1:50.81.

While Marietta's men did not have any individual or relay champions, freshman Caleb Muller (Columbus, Bexley) had the standout performance of the meet when he took fifth in the 3,000m Run. Muller, who crossed the line in 9:07.00 and met the OAC's B Qualifying Standard, ran the second fastest time in the event in Head Coach Derek Stanley's coaching career.

Another of the men's highlights came from freshman Caleb Ellis (St. Albans, W.Va., St. Albans), who ran a new personal record in the 800m Run and finished a team-best seventh with a time of 2:04.89.

Freshman James Shinaberry (Fredricktown, Fredricktown) set another personal record with his performance in the Pole Vault. He successfully cleared 3.51m (11-06.25) and placed fourth.

Marietta's 4x200m Relay and Distance Medley Relay both finished runner-up on Saturday. Sophomore Matt Hickman (St. Mary's, W.Va., St. Mary's), freshman Willam McCulloch (Nelsonville, York), sophomore Ryan Householder (Frazeysburg, Tri-Valley) and sophomore Chase Oberfield (Heath, Heath) combined to run a time of 1:35.13. Freshman Bryn Perkey (Middlebourne, W.Va., Tyler Consolidated), freshman Blake Kaelin, freshman Cody Strahler (Waterford, Waterford) and senior Michael Siringer (Willowick, Willoughby South) teamed together to cross the line of the DMR in 11:40.98.

Marietta track and field hits the road for the first time this season when the Pioneers compete at the OAC Relays on Saturday (Jan. 30) afternoon on the campus of Baldwin-Wallace College.
