Amanda Kaverman: Putting our Training to the Test at the MAC Championships

Amanda Kaverman: Putting our Training to the Test at the MAC Championships

This past weekend was filled with many great accomplishments for UT athletics. The swimmers won their first MAC title and the women's basketball team won the division title. I would like to congratulate these ladies and their coaches on their achievements.

I would also like to congratulate the women's track and field team on their performance at MAC. Though we finished eighth out of 12 teams, which disappointed some of us, I think we did really well for lacking depth in certain areas, as well as not having athletes to compete in some events. I am very proud to have been a part of this year's team, as we had more team support than in years past. I am sure I am not the only one who appreciated those who were willing to travel three or more hours to show their support.

Though we did not have the overall finish we hoped for, we did have several great performances. Ari Fisher finished first in the 5,000m, which was a great race to watch, especially when she kept picking people off as she lapped more than half of the pack. Michelle Sutherland finished second in the high jump -- I unfortunately did not get to witness her achievement, but I know it was a good show. Alex Afloari landed in fourth place in the triple jump, even without jumping her last attempt. Fourth place is a difficult position to be in but don't worry Alex, use this as motivation; I know you will get after it outdoors!

I am really proud of our team as a whole, but I am especially proud of the group I spend the most of my time with, the sprinters. Sarah Woodrum made it to the finals in the 400m, one of the MAC's most competitive races, as a freshman. Kimara Morgan also ran a personal record in the 400m which I know is lighting a fire under her spikes to run faster. My first place finish in the 200m has left me craving for bigger and better things and I hope the rest of the team feels the same. Let's put in the work ladies and go get 'em at outdoor MAC!

Amanda Kaverman is a junior sprinter from Sylvania, OH. In addition to winning the 200 meter dash at the MAC Indoor Championships, she also placed eighth in the 60 meter dash.
