High jumper Mike Hlatky had one of John Carroll's top showings at the Division I-dominated 49er Classic
When moving from the indoor to the outdoor season, there is something about fresh air and sunshine that boosts the psyche of the track & field athlete.
There was plenty of both for the John Carroll Blue Streaks this weekend at the 49er Classic staged at the Irwin Belk Track in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Final Results
Rubbing shoulders with a good number of NCAA Division I and II schools as well as a handful of Division III rivals, the Blue Streaks used Charlotte as a good starting point to launch their outdoor efforts.
Several performers picked up outdoor where they left off indoor.
Mike Minjock (Seven Hills, OH, St. Ignatius)did not lose a step as the freshman placed seventh out of 44 competitors in the long jump by clearing 21-10 3/4 (6.67 meters).
Also showing no signs of slowing down was
Michael Hlatky (Brooklyn Heights, OH, Cleveland St. Ignatius). The sophomore also earned a seventh place finish by posting a height of 6-00 3/4 (1.85 meters).
Outdoor competition also signalled the return of the discus, and
Steven Borowy (Garfield Hts., OH, Trinity)showed he was ready to go by finishing second in his section and 12th overall with his mark of 129-05 (39.46 meters).
2009 NCAA Division III national qualifier
David Hickey (Stow, OH, Akron St. Vincent - St. Mary)reemerged as well in his signature event, the 400-meter hurdles. His time of 54.87 was good for a ninth place showing -- just missing a spot in the eight-man final.
Hickey also teamed with
Bill Zaccardelli (Parma, OH, St. Ignatius),
Anthony Colbert (Cleveland, OH, Jane Addams)and
Tony Mihalich (Lewiston, NY, Buffalo St. Joseph's Collegiate)to help JCU finish ninth in the 4 x 400 relay (2:22.33).
