Women's Track & Field Opens Outdoor Season With Strong Efforts At 49er Classic

Stephanie Charlillo ran lead off on John Carroll's 4 x 100 relay that came within seconds of breaking the school record in the first outdoor meet of 2010
Competing against the likes of Division I schools such as North Carolina State, UNC-Asheville, Davidson, Winthrop and host UNC-Charlotte, John Carroll's sight lines were more on individual performances than individual finishes.

That being said, John Carroll had individuals that posted both impressive times and distances as well as places at the three-day Charlotte 49er Classic that concluded Saturday at the Irwin Belk Track & Field Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Final Results

The women's 4 x 100 relay was a prime example of what John Carroll accomplished. Stephanie Charlillo (Strongsville, OH, Magnificat), Maureen Creighton (Kenmore, NY, Nardin), Maura Stepanski (Tampa, FL, Tampa Catholic)and Alicia Giannell (Perry, OH, Perry)combined for their first outdoor effort and posted a time of 51.24. It was second best in their heat, 12th best overall, and was just slightly over a second off the school record in that event.

Stepanksi also had a solid showing in the long jump. Her distance of 16-05 1/4 (5.01 meters) placed her 12th out of 29 competitors.

Emily Tillmaand (Xenia, OH, Xenia) had the top individual finish, as her time of 10:58.38 placed her sixth in the 3,000-meter run. Kelly Grieve (Toledo, OH, Sylvania Southview) had an eighth place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with her time of 12:31.43.

Brittany Musa (Madison, OH, Madison) had a memorable weekend in Charlotte. In addition to placing eighth in the women's high jump final (4-11 / 1.50 meters), Musa competed in the heptathlon. Her final point total of 3196 put her in eighth place out of 12 participants, with her best individual event the high jump (5-00.50 / 1.54 meters) in which she finished in second place.
