FINAL RESULTS

Bowling Green State University's track and field team started the 2010 outdoor season in rousing fashion on Saturday at the Toledo Collegiate Challenge.  The Falcons won eight of the meet's 20 events on their way to a second place finish.

The Toledo Collegiate Challenge had a field of three teams.  Both of BGSU's opponents were from the Mid-American Conference, as Ohio University joined the Falcons and Toledo in the meet.  The Orange and Brown's eight event victories were the most of any of the three teams.  Toledo won seven of the 20 events, while Ohio won five.

Leading the way for the Falcons was junior Heather Conger.  Conger won two events on Saturday, taking home top honors in the 800 meter and 1500 meter runs.  In the 800 meters, she finished in 2:21.25, winning the race by four seconds.  Conger's margin of victory was just a bit smaller in the 1500 meters; her time of 4:41.24 was one and a half seconds better than teammate Autumn Dettmann, who finished second.

Katie Borgelt, a freshman, also scored points for Bowling Green in the 800 meter run with a fifth place finish (2.27.71); she also finished 8th in the 1500 meters (4:52.68).

Fellow freshman Felicia Jefferson won the 200 meter dash in 25.76 seconds.  That time currently ranks in the top 11 for the event, among all MAC athletes thus far in the outdoor campaign.  Jefferson also took part in both relay teams.

In the 4x100 relay, Jefferson helped the Falcons win with a time of 47.29.  Along with Brittani McNeal, Jeanette Pettigrew and Jessica Grant, Bowling Green improved by two seconds over their 2009 time at the TCC.

Bowling Green finished second in the 4x400 relay.  In that event, freshman Allison Weimer joined Jefferson, Pettigrew and McNeal.  Together, they finished in 4:03.09 -- an improvement of 19 seconds over the Falcons' 2009 TCC mark.

Grant, yet another of Bowling Green's freshman class, had a successful day in individual events, as well.  She placed second in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.46 seconds, just four one-hundredths of a second behind the winner.  She also finished fourth in the 200 meter dash won by Jefferson.

Junior Barbara Powers was another in the Falcons' parade of winners on Saturday.  Powers won the 2000 meter steeplechase by completing the race in 7:14.62, two seconds ahead of her next-closest opponent.

The day's slate of track events saw several other sterling finishes by Falcon athletes.  Junior Rachael Doughty placed second in the 100 meter hurdles.  Her time of 15.29 seconds beat her time at the 2009 TCC by 0.3 seconds.  Doughty also finished ninth in the 200 meter dash.

Allison Weimer, who (as noted above) helped the 4x400 relay team finish second, also placed third in the 400 meter dash with a time of 59.80.  Sophomore Saisha Gailliard (1:02.19) completed the race in fifth place.

Sophomore Ashley Fischer and junior Sally Kandie finished third in their events, as well.  Fischer posted a mark of 10:33.65 in the 3000 meter run, while Kandie finished the 5000 meters in 18:28.72.

Bowling Green fared extremely well on the track, but the Falcons were no stranger to the winner's circle in field events, either.  The Orange and Brown won three of the eight field competitions.

Freshman Tatijana Jacobson had a successful jump of 5-06.00 to win the high jump.  Meanwhile, Sabrina Forstein, whose senior campaign was filled with victories in the pole vault during the indoor season, continued that trend on Saturday by winning that event again.  This time, Forstein posted a score of 11-05.75.

Not to be outdone, another freshman scored a victory in the discus throw.  Brooke McCombs won with a toss of 139-10 (42.63m).  The throw was five feet better than the second-place finisher.  She also placed third in the hammer throw (148-00) and sixth in the shot put (37-07.25).

Sophomore Ashley Harris competed in three of the throwing events and came away with three top-five finishes.  Harris placed third in the shot put (40-01.50), and she finished fourth in both the discus and hammer throws.  In fact, BGSU had three of the top four finishers in the hammer throw, as freshman Kristin Boettcher outthrew both Harris and McCombs to finish second.

Brittani McNeal, who was part of the winning 4x100 relay team, placed second in the long jump.  Her mark of 18-06.50 was just over a foot shy of the winner.

Junior Page Lane also recorded a top-five finish for the Falcons; she had a toss of 112-02 in the javelin throw, good for third place.

With the second-place team finish in hand, Bowling Green now prepares to travel to Kalamazoo, Mich., where they will participate in the Jack Shaw Invitational.  That meet will be held Saturday, April 3rd.  More information about that meet will be posted in the coming days on www.bgsufalcons.com.
