Schedule Change Proves Beneficial For JCU Men's Track & Field With Sixth Place Finish At Wheeling

John Carroll did not originally intend to compete at the Bill Van Horne Invitational Saturday, but based on the results, may elect to add the meet as a permanent fixture on its schedule.

In a 14-team field at the competition held at Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling, West Virginia, the Blue Streaks amassed 68.33 points to finish sixth. Malone College (144) edged Mount Union (141.5) for the team title.

Results

Michael Hlatky (Brooklyn Heights, OH, Cleveland St. Ignatius) was instrumental in the push for points, as he recorded a second place effort in the high jump by clearing 1.85 meters.

The long jump proved to be a gold mine of points as well. Bryan Wideman was third (6.64 meters), Mike Minjock (Seven Hills, OH, St. Ignatius) was fourth (6.59 meters) and RK Glover (Wayzata, MN, Benilde-St. Margaret's Academy) was sixth (6.29 meters) to net the Blue Streaks 14 points in this event alone.

Minjock (4th, 12.68 meters) and KylKyle Fiegel (Akron, NY, Central) (8th, 12.10) also scored for JCU in the triple jump.

Lou Galiano (Mayfield, OH, Mayfield) effort of 14.37 meters produced a seventh place showing in the shot put, while Steven Borowy (Garfield Hts., OH, Trinity) threw the javelin 48.28 meters to claim third place.

Vince Kopen (Hermitage, PA , Hickory) made his pole vault debut, and made it count by tying for eight place. he cleared the bar at 3.80 meters.

Wideman was seventh in the 100-meter dash final (11.52). he won his heat and qualified for the final with a prelim time of 11.40.

In the 400-meter dash, Bill Zaccardelli (Parma, OH, St. Ignatius) placed fourth (49.79) and Tony Mihalich (Lewiston, NY, Buffalo St. Joseph's Collegiate)finished seventh (50.69).

Two Blue Streaks reached the final of the men's 110-meter hurdles. After his success in the high jump, Hlatky came back to finish fifth in this event with a time of 16.85 (prelim time was 16.57) and Dennis Love (Bedford, OH, St. Peter Chanel) was sixth in 17.40 (prelim time was 16.47). Matt Szep also scored points for JCU in the 400-meter hurdles, placing seventh in 1:00.30.

Nick Wojtasik (Erie, PA, Mercyhurst Prepatory) had a strong effort in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, running a time of 10:37.93 to place sixth.

In the final of the 4 x 100 relay, the quartet of Wideman, Zaccardelli, Love and Matt Mihalich (Lewiston, NY, Buffalo St. Joseph Collegiate) placed fourth in 43.95. The 4 x 400 foursome of Zaccardelli, David Hickey (Stow, OH, Akron St. Vincent - St. Mary) Anthony Colbert (Cleveland, OH, Jane Addams) and Tony Mihalich finished third in 3:27.95
