Within 3A girls, if we were to score the available rankings to date as a meet, the advantage goes to the teams that have had the opportunity to compete in multiple meets, and especially those teams whose meets haven't been among the most wind and weather afflicted meets. A prime example of the kind of oversight this situation creates is that Beth Jones, the defending state champion and 3A state record holder, does not currently appear among the 3A leaders in the long jump.
Another, and smaller, problem centers around the issues of athletes showing in the rankings in five events or four athletes from the same school in a single event. Obviously, neither scenario is possible at the 3A state meet.
With those allowances made, The Classical Academy is currently leading with strong showings also being put in by Cedaredge, Eaton, Middle Park, and Brush. Coaches and athletes will be strategizing events between now and May 20-22, so expect to see some shuffling of names, events, and places in the interim.
