Pankowksi provisionally qualifies in Javelin Throw as women win and men take second at Don Frail Invitational

MARIETTA, Ohio — Sophomore Mike Pankowski (Pittsburgh, Pa., Woodland Hills) hit the NCAA Provisional Qualifying Mark in the Javelin Throw and was one of 10 individual champions to highlight a successful day for Marietta College track and field at its Don Frail Invitational Saturday (April 10) afternoon at Don Drumm Stadium. The Pioneer women took home the team title with 154 points, while the Pioneer men finished runner-up to 135 points. [Results]

Notre Dame (Ohio) College won the men's competiton with 176 points and took runner-up in the women's standings with 139 points. The College of Wooster finished third in both the men's and women's rankings with 105 points and 102 points, respectively.

Pankowski set the school record in the Javelin Throw as a freshman before transferring at the end of that 2006 season. He returned to the program this year and has picked up right were he left off. Pankowski saved his best throw for last Saturday, unleashing a school record toss of 57.83m (189-09), which was just over the provisional qualifying mark of 57.80m and earned him the victory.

Junior Nikki Stone (Madison, Madison) also set a new school record while winning the women's Javelin Throw. Stone, who already held the Pioneer record, improved upon her career best with a toss of 37.62m (123-05). Sophomore Brittany Sims (Columbus, Eastmoor Academy), sophomore Corryn Muench (Cold Spring, Ky., Newport Central Catholic), freshman Kristeva Rowe (Toledo, Sylvania Southview) and sophomore Lauren Asbury (White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., Greenbrier East) set Marietta's third school record of the meet when they took runner-up in the 4x100m Relay with a time of 49.45 seconds.

Four women joined Stone in earning individual championships on Saturday. Sophomore Jennifer Emmert (Martinsburg, W.Va., Martinsburg) won the 5,000m Run with a season's best performance of 19:40.82. Sophomore Kim Keesler (Chagrin Falls, Chagrin Falls) finished first in the Pole Vault with a vault of 3.38m (11-01.00). Freshman Jacci Weaver (North Lima, South Range) won the Discus Throw with a mark of 26.25m (118-011). Junior Stephanie Hammond (Toledo, Central Catholic) took first in the Hammer Throw with a toss of 40.98m (134-05.). Marietta's men also had five individual champions. In addition to Pankowski, freshman Caleb Muller (Columbus, Bexley) won the 800m Run with season's best time of 2:00.75. Freshman Caleb Ellis (St. Albans, W.Va., St. Albans) took first in the 1,500m Run with a season's best performance of 4:09.47. Sophomore Terrance Wallace (Westerville, Westerville Central) captured the 3,000m Steeplechase with personal record time of 9:57.26. Senior AJ Pulice (Hubbard, Hubbard) won the Hammer Throw with a career-best toss of 37.99m (124-08).

Six Pioneers and a second relay also took runner-up, while 10 individuals finished in third place on Saturday. Sims placed second in the 100m Dash with a season's best time of 12.79 seconds and third in the 200m Dash with a time of 26.88 seconds. Sophomore Ashley Bault (Atwater, Waterloo) was second in the Long Jump with a mark of 5.32m (17-05.50) and third in the High Jump with a leap of 1.57m (5-01.75). Senior Stephanie Williams (Vincent, Warren Local) finished second in the 800m Run with a collegiate best time of 2:28.94. Senior Shannon McDonald (Lorain, Amherst Steele) placed runner-up in the 1,500m Run with a season's best time of 5:07.00. Weaver finished second in the Shot Put with a mark of 11.45m (37-06.75). Senior Josh Mickle (Madison, Madison) placed second in the 800m Run with a season's best performance of 2:01.02. Senior Chad Byers (New Matamoras, River) was second in the Shot Put with a mark of 13.84m (45-05.00). The Men's 4x400m Relay, which featured sophomore Chase Oberfield (Heath, Heath), sophomore Ryan Householder (Frazeysburg, Tri-Valley), senior Cody Thomas (North Olmsted, North Olmsted) and junior Anthony Williams (Columbus, Bishop Hartley), took runner-up with a season's best time of 3:23.99.

Sophomore Jessica Gebhart (Eaton, Eaton) placed third in the 100m Hurdles with a personal record time of 16.30 seconds. Rowe made her debut in the Long Jump and took third with a leap of 5.06m (16-07.25). Senior Sidra Dhiraprasiddhi (Hilliard, Darby) was third in the Triple Jump with a season's best jump of 10.46m (34-04.00). Thomas placed third in the 400m Dash with a personal record performance of 50.78 seconds. Sophomore James Vogt (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) took third in the High Jump with a mark of 1.78m (5-10.00) and third in the Long Jump with a mark of 5.95m (19-06.25). Freshman Gaston Hayes (Cleveland, Rhodes) placed third in the Shot Put with a season's best toss of 13.76m (45-01.75). Senior Vlad Grecu (Akron/Firestone) finished third in the Hammer Throw with a mark of 35.99m (118-01). The women's 4x400m Relay, which included sophomore Danielle Staub (Boxford, Mass., Masconomet Regional), senior Brenda Puckett (Eaton, Preble Shawnee), Williams and freshman Lydia Tillmaand (Xenia, Xenia), also took third after crossing the line in 4:24.11.

Marietta is back in action Saturday (April 17) when it competes in the All-Ohio Championship, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University. Action is slated to begin at 10 a.m.
