Mike Minjock sprung into national prominence with his winning effort in the long jump
Team scores were not kept Saturday at the 2010 Sparky Adams Invitational hosted by Baldwin-Wallace College at George Finnie Stadium in Berea.
John Carroll figured it could have earned a lion's share based on its performances.
Results
Mike Minjock (Seven Hills, OH, St. Ignatius) and his title-winning effort headlined the field efforts Saturday. His mark of 7.24 not only captured first place, but also netted Minjock an NCAA provisional standard.
In fact, he narrowly missed the automatic qualifying standard of 7.30 (23-9), which makes his performance the third best by a Division III athlete this season based on national marks posted on or before April 23.
he also shattered the school record of 22-8 set by Luke Baum in 1986.
Also placing in the top ten of the long jump were
RK Glover (Wayzata, MN, Benilde-St. Margaret's Academy) (3rd, 6.80 meters) and
Nick Swanson (Sagamore Hills, OH, Trinity) (8th, 6.27). Triple jumpers
Stephen Kedzuf (Plymouth, MN, Benilde St. Margaret's) (9th, 12.45 meters) and
Bryan Wideman (Boca Raton, FL, Boca Raton) (10th, 12.30 meters) also fared well.
Michael Hlatky (Brooklyn Heights, OH, Cleveland St. Ignatius) almost grabbed a title Saturday, finishing as runner-up in the high jump by clearing 1.92 meters.
Other top tens were turned in by
Vince Kopen (Hermitage, PA , Hickory) in the pole vault (8th, 3.95 meters),
Lou Galiano (Mayfield, OH, Mayfield) in the shot put (7th, 14.38 meters), and
Steven Borowy (Garfield Hts., OH, Trinity) owy in the javelin (7th, 48.02 meters).
Both a sprinter and a hurdler qualified for finals. In the 100-meter dash,
Matt Mihalich (Lewiston, NY, Buffalo St. Joseph Collegiate) placed eighth in preliminaries (11.50) and sixth in the final (11.56). In the 110-meter hurdles,
Matt Szep (Westlake, OH, St. Ignatius) was eighth in the prelims (16.87) before running a 16.63 in the final to finish fifth.
Szep also had a top ten in the 400-meter hurdles, placing third (57.44). In the same event,
Mike Coughlin (Parma, OH, Holy Name) was sixth (59.00).
JCU had three top tens in the 400-meter dash, and all three ran season best times.
Anthony Colbert (Cleveland, OH, Jane Addams) was fifth (49.99),
Tony Mihalich (Lewiston, NY, Buffalo St. Joseph's Collegiate) was seventh (50.38) and
David Hickey (Stow, OH, Akron St. Vincent - St. Mary) was ninth (50.46).
Jacob Smith (Canfiield, OH, Canfield)was John Carroll's top placer in the distance events, finishing seventh in the 5,000-meter run (15:52.79).
The Blue Streaks top performing relay was the 4 x 100, as Colbert,
Drew Krainz (Walton Hills, OH, Cleveland St. Ignatius),
Matt Mihalich and Bryan Wideman placed third in a time of 42.89.
