Ohio Indoor Recap: Top Storylines Feb.16-Feb. 22

There are just two weeks to go before the OATCCC Indoor State meet. Athletes are doing their final tune-ups and pushing for a spot on the line at Spire. On the boys side, field events looked strong this weekend while Jay'Vier Kerr (200m) had a great performance. The 60mH event was insanely quick. Kadia Rock (200m) and Elena Aldrink (1600m) found themselves on the top of the list for girls OH #1 marks while Sophia Szolosi absolutely dominated a full 2 miles.

Kadia Rock rewrote her own standard in the 200m

Kadia Rock (Spire Academy 2026) rewrote her own standard in the 200m dash this past weekend at the NEOITC All-Star Meet. The Auburn commit became the first girl to crack the 24-second barrier this indoor season so far by running a 23.80. What makes this even more impressive is that she did it all by herself as she took a 1.5 second win.

Her weekend also consisted of the 60m dash where she ran a new personal-best of 7.50 which is a new OH #3. As soon as the gun went off, no one was catching her.

These performances add to her already impressive season so far. She also holds the OH #1 mark in the 400m dash where she ran a 53.51 at the SPIRE Scholastic Showcase Meet two weekends ago. This season, she has also been able to take a crack at the 300m dash where she ran a 38.45 at the SPIRE HS Invitational

A breakthrough 1600m season for Elena Aldrink

Elena Aldrink (Olen. Liberty 2026) is someone who just keeps getting faster. Her time of 4:52.87 from the Ashland HS High Performance Invite puts her at an OH #1 mark. Before this season, she had not cracked the five-minute barrier in the 1600m run. She did it for the first time this month at the Wittenberg HS Open #2 meet, running 4:57.19.

She also had a stellar performance at the SPIRE Scholastic Showcase meet where she ran 10:23.58 in the 3200m run. This was a massive personal-best for her by over 10 seconds.

Aldrink has two state-titles to her name as she won the OHSAA Division 1 State Championship on the grass this past fall. She also claimed the outdoor 3200m run title at the OHSAA Division 1 State Championships in 2024 where she ran a 10:35.34. She will look to add to that number before heading off to compete for the University of Washington this fall.

Sophia Szolosi brought the heat to the Windy City

The Windy City proved to be worthwhile for Sophia Szolosi (Athens 2026). She ran a full 2 miles at The Circuit-Chicago meet and put down a blazing fast time of 10:10.64. This is a new personal-record for her and also beats any of her 3200m times.

The Duke commit put herself into a competitive field with some of the best high-schoolers in the country. She ended up finishing third overall. Eight girls in that race put down a sub 10:20 mark.

She enters this season coming off of an OHSAA Division 2 State Championship win from cross country this past fall. Szolosi also swept the 1600m and 3200m races on the state level during her indoor and outdoor seasons last year.

Jay'Vier Kerr is back on top of the 200m rankings

He's back on top. Jay'Vier Kerr (Glenville 2026) made it a lights out race at the NEOITC All-Star Meet with an overall personal-best of 21.60. No one was there to catch him as he won by over 0.6 seconds.

Kerr finished 2nd in the 60mH running 8.26 earlier in the meet.

Kerr has been able to do a little bit of everything this indoor season as far as events go. He has done three different hurdle events along with six different sprint events, all ranging between 55m and 500m. As if the running was not enough, he has also recorded marks in HJ, LJ, TJ and Shot Put all within this indoor season. He will have to make a decision on what events to compete for the indoor state meet.

He finished as state champion at the OHSAA Division 2 State Championships in the 400m dash this past outdoor season, blazing to a time of 47.84. With that being said, his only 400m mark from this indoor season has come from the Spire Scholastic Showcase Meet where he ran a 47.69.

What a weekend in the 60mH

Not only did there become a new OH #1 mark, but also the #2, #3, and #4 times all being set in the span of two days.

Braylon Keyes (Plus 2 University-TCC 2027) started the weekend strong running 7.92 at the Ashland HS High Performance Invite. He was the first person to crack the 8-second barrier all season and now sits at OH #1.

The following day, Kelvin Crisafulli (Thom. Worthington 2026) and Carsen Hostetler (Indian Valley 2027) decided that they wanted a part of the top marks at the Jerome Fields HS Open. They ran side by side and Crisafulli ended up winning with a 7.98 seconds. Hostetler clocked an 8.01 in a close battle to the line.

On the other side of the state, Mason Englund (Fremont Ross 2027) lined up at the University of Findlay Dave's Running High School LAST Chance meet. He clocked an exact 8.00 and took the win nearly 0.4 seconds ahead of everyone else.

All of these new risers just shook up the rankings and will be ones to keep an eye on when the state meet rolls around.

Field events get fierce

It was quite the weekend for all the action that did not take place on the track. Four new field events on the boys side had a new OH #1.

Kicking things off, Ronald Neal (Gah. Lincoln 2027) soared to a 23-9.5 mark in the LJ at the Jerome Fields HS Open. This is his new lifetime personal-best. Before this month, he had not cracked the 23-foot barrier.

Luke Schnieber (Cin. Co. Day 2027) raised his own bar in PV with a new best height of 16-10 at the MSJ HS #7 Meet. This beats his previous best set at the Ohio State High School Qualifier #2 when he cleared 16-7. He has now officially jumped a foot higher than he did when he placed third at the OHSAA Division 3 State Championships last spring.

Hunter Spangler (Liberty Center 2026) became the first person all season to throw over 60-feet. His mark of 60-3 from the Defiance College HS Last Chance meet sets him at a dominating OH #1. This was only his second time competing during indoor season this year so far. He came back as the defending state champion from the OHSAA Division 3 State Championships this past spring.

Abe Swathwood (Hil. Davidson 2026) got it done in the weight throw with a 75-5 mark set at the Jerome Fields HS Open. This is a new OH #1 by less than an inch. He put down an absolutely massive personal-best as he had never thrown over 70 feet before this weekend.
