Hickey And The Hurdlers Lead Charge For Blue Streaks At OAC Outdoor Championships

Matthew Szep was part of an outstanding OAC championship effort by the Blue Streak hurdlers
It is not the name of some singing group from the early days of rock 'n' roll, but David Hickey (Stow, OH, Akron St. Vincent - St. Mary) and the hurdlers put a charge into the efforts of the John Carroll squad at the 2010 Ohio Athletic Conference Men's Track & Field Championships.

Results

In the two-day event held at Mount Union Stadium in Alliance, the Blue Streaks scored 65.50 points -- 28 by the hurdlers alone -- to finish in sixth place between Otterbein (66.50) and Capital (41). Heidelberg won the team title with 158 points.

Hickey won John Carroll's lone individual crown of the met when he won the 400-meter hurdles in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 53.83. It is the 16th best time by a Division III athlete this season.

In winning the title, Hickey had plenty of company. RK Glover (Wayzata, MN, Benilde-St. Margaret's Academy)earned All-OAC status by placing third in the race with a time of 55.84. JCU also racked up points with three top eight placers in the 100-meter hurdles event. Denny love was fourth (15.88), Szep was sixth (16.39) and Mike Hlatky took eighth (16.60).

Hlatky also was part of a solid effort by the jumpers. In the high jump, Hlatky placed eighth (1.94 meters).

In the long jump, national qualifier Mike Minjock was the OAC runner-up by clearing 6.98 meters. teammate RK Glover took fifth in the long jump (6.85 meters) and was fourth in the triple jump (13.63 meters). Bryan Wideman also earned points as he was sixth in the triple jump (13.43 meters).

Steven Borowy (5th in the javelin, 51.01 meters) and Vince Kopen (8th in the pole vault, 3.98 meters) also were among the point scorers in field events for the Blue Streaks.

JCU also had two distance runners score at the OAC Championship meet. Jake Smith tied for sixth in the 5000-meter run (15:42.88) and Aaron Sharp earned eighth in the 800-meter run (1:58.48).
